Steelers Face Big Challenge Against Jets’ Adams and Wilson

Joey Porter Jr. and Donte Jackson will need to step up big time against the New York Jets this Sunday night. The Jets made a big but somewhat expected splash earlier this week by trading for star wide receiver Davante Adams, and pairing him with their rising star, Garrett Wilson. This dynamic duo may present a real challenge for any defense.

Porter has gotten off to a strong start in his career, while Jackson has fit in seamlessly as the Steelers’ CB2. Jackson already has three interceptions this season, which ties for third most in the NFL, complementing Porter’s one interception. Both cornerbacks are about to face their toughest test yet, going up against two receivers who can easily be the number one option on many teams. It’s a bit unclear how the Steelers will handle these matchups. Typically, Porter shadows the opposing team’s top receiver, but with both Adams and Wilson bringing their A-game, the Steelers’ secondary will be stretched pretty thin.

Fortunately, the return of Alex Highsmith should provide a boost. Having Highsmith back in the lineup will help the Steelers’ pass rush, allowing them to disrupt Aaron Rodgers and force him into uncomfortable situations in the pocket. With Highsmith drawing some attention away from T.J. Watt, the entire pass rush should benefit, as all rushers will have more opportunities to apply pressure. If Highsmith and Watt can create some chaos, it might lead to errant throws from Rodgers, creating chances for Porter and Jackson to make some plays.

According to Pro Football Reference, Porter has allowed 17 completions on 26 targets for 220 yards, averaging 12.9 yards per completion, with zero touchdowns given up and an allowed QBR of 75.8. Jackson, on the other hand, has allowed 12 completions on 24 targets for 163 yards, averaging 13.6 yards per completion, also giving up zero touchdowns allowing a QBR of 32.5. The pair of cornerbacks are having a good season, a breath of fresh air for the Steelers secondary.

With the Jets’ new dynamic receiving duo in Adams and Wilson, Porter and Jackson will need to bring their best. If the Steelers’ defense can rally together, it could turn into a great showdown. I, along with all of Steelers Nation will be watching closely to see if Porter and Jackson can rise to the occasion and if Highsmith can be a disruptor in his return. If this defense can continue to play together, the Steelers will have a solid shot at containing this new Jets offense and come away with a big win on Sunday night.
