Steelers on the Rise: Let Go of Fear and Embrace Optimism

In life and in sports, people often align themselves as optimists or pessimists. Even realists eventually lean one way or the other. I like to think of myself as a realist, but I’ll always side with optimism—especially when my Steelers are in the position they’re in right now.

At 8-2, the Pittsburgh Steelers not only lead the AFC North but are firmly positioning themselves as legitimate Super Bowl contenders. Their latest victory came against their biggest rival, the Baltimore Ravens. Yes, the offense struggled at times, particularly in the red zone—a glaring issue that must be addressed if the Steelers hope to make a deep playoff run. But championship teams find ways to win regardless of adversity. That’s what separates good teams from great ones. Against the Ravens, the Steelers delivered with outstanding complementary football, leaning on defense and special teams to step up when the offense lagged.

The Ravens entered the game as one of the league’s best teams, led by MVP favorite Lamar Jackson and the #1 offense. Faced with their toughest test of the 2024 season, what did the Steelers do? They held the Ravens to their worst game of the year—a defensive masterclass, coming just a week after shutting down another top-5 NFL offense.

The defense was nothing short of spectacular, creating three pivotal turnovers. Nick Herbig, making a strong impact in his return, forced a fumble that was recovered by former Raven DeShon Elliott. Patrick Queen played like a man on a mission, forcing and recovering a fumble in a standout revenge game he clearly took personally. Meanwhile, rookie Payton Wilson etched his name into Steelers-Ravens history books with a jaw-dropping, All-Pro caliber interception, ripping the ball away from Justice Hill mid-catch—a play that showcased his elite range, instincts, and playmaking ability.

Special teams were just as crucial in securing the victory. Chris Boswell making a strong case as the best kicker in the AFC North—and one of the NFL’s elite—by going a perfect 6-for-6 on field goals. His performance included three makes from 50 yards or longer, capped by a booming 57-yarder that reminded everyone: Bos is money!

Before the season began, with so many questions surrounding this roster, who could have predicted the Steelers would be sitting at 8-2, holding a commanding lead in the AFC North, within range of a top-two playoff seed, and firmly in the Super Bowl conversation? Not many. Countless talking heads, TV and radio personalities, and podcast hosts predicted the Pittsburgh Steelers would finish last in the AFC North, with Coach Mike Tomlin enduring his first losing season. But here we are, defying expectations and silencing doubters.

So, Steeler Nation, let’s embrace the moment. Instead of nitpicking the negatives, let’s enjoy the ride. This team has shown resilience, adaptability, and—most importantly—a knack for winning when it matters most. The future is bright, the momentum is undeniable, and the possibilities are endless. LFG! Here We Go, Steelers, Here We Go!!
