Wild Card Players to Watch in the Steelers Wild Card Matchup

On this week’s episode of The Steelers Fix podcast, Jeremy Betz and I each gave three under-the-radar players that we think could have a major impact for the Steelers in their wild card matchup against the Buffalo Bills. In potentially blizzard-like conditions, there are many variables likely to play a factor in the game, which could allow for several players to see increased roles or, at least, have greater importance in their roles.

Today, I am going to share with you the three “wild card” players I gave on this week’s show, along with an explanation as to why I believe they could play such an important role.

Calvin Austin

In a game which will be altered due to inclement weather, special teams will play such an important role. I fully expect a low-scoring game that will be won in the trenches and on special teams, and a kick return or punt return for a touchdown could be the determining factor. In a game which I expect very few explosive plays to occur, winning the battle for field position could make a huge difference in the outcome of the game. Austin may not see a major role on offense, but if he can be the best return man in this game, he gives the Steelers a better chance to get points on the board. Austin has come close to taking a return to the house on several occasions. Perhaps this is the week he makes it happen.

Nick Herbig and Markus Golden

Losing T.J. Watt is a massive loss for this Steelers defense, but fortunately, the Steelers do have a decent bit of depth at the position. Golden is likely to play more on early downs and obvious running situations, but do not discount the value of Herbig, as his speed and tenacity as a pass rusher could make life difficult for Allen on 3rd downs, especially if it requires a pass of significant distance in order to get the first down. Herbig is no T.J. Watt, but Watt has certainly taken him under his wing this season, as he has developed several of Watt’s moves while also developing a few of his own. Watt cannot be replaced by anybody, but the combination of Golden and Herbig can be enough for the Steelers to get by if they can display throughout the entirety of the game.

Mark Robinson

This one seems rather obvious after last week, but not many people are talking about it. Mark Robinson only played 13 snaps against the Ravens, but in those snaps, he accumulated 5 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 forced fumble. His playing time may have been due to the fact the Steelers were facing a run-heavy Baltimore offense, requiring more eight-man boxes; but regardless, Robinson played well and proved he is capable of taking on a larger workload on the defense. This is a gamechanger for the Steelers at linebacker, who have been ridden with injuries at the position. With Elandon Roberts coming back and Mark Robinson emerging as a difference maker on defense, the Steelers are now much more equipped to take on a Buffalo rushing attack that has regained its footing since the team hired Joe Brady as offensive coordinator. If the Steelers win this game, it will likely be due to a strong run defense, and Robinson can help make that happen.
