Who gets the game ball for the Steelers 20-10 win over the Chargers in Week 3?

The Pittsburgh Steelers started off the 2024 season with their third-straight win with a 20-10 victory over the Chargers in Pittsburgh. Looking for their first 3-0 start since 2020, there were a number of Steelers players who stepped up and helped lead this team to victory.

But who gets the game ball?

Each win for the Steelers this season, I will set forth nominations to receive the SCN game ball. It does not necessarily have to be the best player on the field, but who really stepped up their game this particular week. After the case has been made, you all decide which player takes home the honor.

Previous Game Ball winners from the 2024 season include:

Week 1: Chris Boswell (92%)
Week 2: Cory Trice (28%)

I will remind everyone of the rules that it is individual players who will be in the running. Although it could be applicable, it will not be either position groups or coaches who are eligible for this designation as they are more in line for Jeff Hartman’s Winners and Losers article.

So here are the nominations in no particular order:

Justin Fields

Although we had his first turnover of the season with a bouncing interception, Justin Fields put together his best numbers with the Steelers so far. Completing 25 of 32 passes for 245 passing yards and a 55-yard touchdown as well as running in the Steelers first touchdown, Fields has the offense even closer to breaking out after Week 3.

Nick Herbig

Increasing his playing time because of the injury to Alex Highsmith, Nick Herb stepped up in a big way. Finishing the day with 2.0 sacks, a forced fumble, and three tackles, Herbig made his presence known as the next man up.

Calvin Austin III

After having two games to start this season that were more about the disappointment of other wide receivers not stepping up other than George Pickens, Calvin Austin got into the action in a big way in the Steelers home opener. Catching four the five balls thrown his way, Austin finished with 95 receiving yards along with a 55-yard touchdown catch and run. Austin also added two punt returns for 20 yards.

Cam Heyward

It doesn’t matter how old he is. Cam Heyward continued to dominate against the run this week and even got himself more involved on the stat sheet when it came to the pass rush. Hayward had 1.0 sack on Sunday which moved him into second place all time for the Steelers only behind T.J. Watt. Heyward also added two tackles for loss and on four total tackles as he anchored the way for the Steelers to shut down the potent Chargers rushing attack.

Cordarrelle Patterson

The Steelers made some calculated decisions when it came to how many players they had active at certain positions. Going with only four wide receivers, when Van Jefferson left with an eye injury it left the Steelers very short. Cordarrelle Patterson stepped in to play receiver and had three catches on five targets for 15 yards. On top of that, Patterson was called on in the fourth quarter as a rusher to help finish off the game as he had four carries for 33 yards and an 8.3 yard per carry average.

So what do you think? Who deserves the game ball for the Steelers this week? Make sure you vote in the poll as this is how the winner will be determined. As a bonus, you can even add another choice if you think someone other than these five should get the honor (and no cheating on the rules or it will be removed). And of course, feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments below.
