What’s next for the 2023 Pittsburgh Steelers?
When NFL rosters are trimmed from 90 players to 53 many feel as if all of the major lifting for the offseason is complete. What else is there to do? The answer is plenty. Even though the Steelers have made their 53-man roster public doesn’t mean the work is done. In fact, some might suggest it’s just beginning.
Let’s take a look at what’s next for the 2023 Steelers, and mainly the team’s front office.
More Roster Moves
In case you live under a rock, the Steelers currently have two punters on their roster. They aren’t going to keep two punters on their roster for the regular season. So, what are they going to do? Are they going to trade a punter? Are they going to just use that roster spot to wait for someone to clear waivers and then cut a punter? Who knows, but Omar Khan is up to something. On top of that, there is always the possibility the team will add a player at a position who they feel is an upgrade over what they have on their current roster.
Sign Practice Squad
Once players have cleared waivers teams can start to sign players to their 16-man practice squad. You can expect the team to make this announcement today as they prepare to round out their practice squad with players they feel can not just get them prepared for regular season games, but can be promoted to the active roster if injuries deplete the roster at specific positions.
Start Prep for Week1
While the news of trades and roster cuts is exciting, nothing is more exciting than games which actually count. Yes, it is time to prepare for Week 1 of the regular season. The last two seasons Mike Tomlin’s crew has had difficult road games in Week 1 (2021 at Buffalo, 2022 at Cincinnati) and he’s found a way to win them both. This game is at home, but against a very difficult opponent in the San Francisco 49ers. The fan base might be focused on the minutiae of the moment, but the organization is focused on Week 1 and getting ready for the regular season. It’s hard to believe, but real games are right around the corner!
