What will the Steelers do at offensive tackle??

The Pittsburgh Steelers have quite a few holes to fill on their roster, some of the obvious holes are on the area on the offensive line. Finishing the 2023 season, the biggest questions on the offensive line are Center and Tackle. Mason Cole has not been “above the line”, as Coach Tomlin would say, and I would also put Dan Moore in that same category. The team is secure in their starting guards of Isaac Seumalo and James Daniels, but let’s talk tackles. The Steelers are confident in their first-round pick of 2023 in Broderick Jones at tackle. With Jones, the big question is “which tackle?”. The Steelers traded up to the 14th pick to select Broderick Jones who played left tackle at the University of Georgia. Jones has played sparingly at left tackle in replace of an injured Dan Moore during the 2023 season, but he eventually took over the starting job at right tackle in the latter part of the season replacing Chuks Okorafor.

What will the Steelers do now? Draft a left tackle and keep Jones at right? Draft a right tackle and move Jones to left? Or do they feel comfortable with their tackle situation as is? There is also free agency. With this draft being deep in talent at tackle I do not see the team looking to free agency. A starting caliber tackle in the NFL does not come cheap, and there are other positions that need to be addressed.

I do believe the Steelers want to move Broderick Jones to his natural position of left tackle, and Jones himself has expressed he wants to play left tackle. If I were the Steelers, I would look at prospects that have played right tackle, and not try to draft a left tackle. Instead, play the rookie on the right side, with Jones on the left. We have seen a few failures in the past few years trying to switch players positions, Kendrick Green and Kevin Dotson come to mind. With the Steelers picking at 20, some of the top tackles will be off the board by the time they are on the clock, but there are plenty more to choose from. Who are some draft prospects the Pittsburgh Steelers should be interested in?

Some of the 1st round tackles to keep an eye on are:

  • Taleise Fuaga – Oregon St
  • JC Latham – Alabama
  • Armaris Mims – Georgia
  • Tyler Guyton – Oklahoma

Other Tackles you may see drafted in later rounds are Kingsley Suamataia – BYU, Blake Fisher – Notre Dame and Roger Rosengarten – Washington. All of these tackles have played right tackle during their collegiate career so there will be no pressure to learn the position from the opposite side at the NFL level. The Steelers are close to having a very strong offensive line. Only time will tell how it will all turn out.
