The Steelers should make the gray face masks a permanent look

I’m not one to get into much talk about what type of alternate uniform the Steelers should wear. Why? I mean, don’t they have the best attire in the history of both pro and college sports? (You can probably throw in high school and Olympic uniforms.)

Besides, no matter what alternate uniforms the Steelers don for a game, they will not be universally adopted by their fans, save for the block-style numbers. They sure do seem to love it when they return to the block-style letters the Steelers wear once a year for their throwback look. In fact, the fans want the organization to return to the block numbers permanently. I don’t know what it is about block numbers, but the Steeler faithful have been clamoring for a return to them since social media gave them a way to clamor for almost everything back in the late ’00s. Don’t get me wrong, I like the block numbers, but going back to them would not be a hill I’d be willing to die on. Who wants to die over something like that? It’s not life or death; it’s just a uniform. Good god, man, you’ve gone mad! Besides, even if the Steelers did go back to the block numbers, it wouldn’t be long before someone started wishing for a return to the script-style numbers they’ve been wearing since like 1997.

Anyway, I didn’t think I wanted the Steelers to return to their block-style jersey numbers until last Sunday night in the game against the Jets when they also paired them with gray face masks to honor the 50-year anniversary of the 1974 team that defeated the Vikings in Super Bowl IX.

Damn, those uniforms were popping. Maybe I was heavily influenced by Pittsburgh’s atypically easy 37-15 victory over a Jets squad led by an aging Aaron Rodgers that looked like the 1974 edition led by an aging Joe Namath.

But the whole look, from top to bottom, worked. Russell Wilson, making his first start at quarterback, even donned the gold shoes made popular by the late, great L.C. Greenwood.

Let’s face it, the Steelers have been a stale franchise for quite some time, and maybe they need a bit of a change. You and I both know the fans will never accept a major uniform change, but a tweak might be good for business. I’m not exactly an expert on NFL policy, but I don’t think the Steelers can make a permanent uniform change mid-season, but how about next year?

Why not? You know they’re going to honor the 50th anniversary of the 1975 squad that defeated the Cowboys in Super Bowl X and slammed that punk, Cliff Harris, to the turf in the process.

Instead of one game, why not go with the gray face masks and block numbers for the entire season? And if you’re going to go with that look for the entire season, why not do it for the foreseeable future?

I’m not one to make an impassioned plea to Art Rooney II, but I will do that now. Please, Mr. Rooney! Give us the gray face masks and block numbers for next year and beyond!
