The Steelers injury situation remains in flux heading into Week 15

The Pittsburgh Steelers are coming off their 10th win of the season, and by beating the Cleveland Browns in Week 14 they advance their record to 10-3. Throughout the process there has been a lot of news and rumors surrounding the Steelers injury situation, both before the game, and in-game injuries.

The biggest name was by far George Pickens. Pickens was listed as Questionable after tweaking his hamstring in Friday’s practice, and after testing the injury before the game was inactive for the game. Following the contest, Mike Tomlin said they didn’t want a small problem to become a larger problem, so they held Pickens out of the game.

In the wake of the Steelers 27-14 win, multiple reports are citing the severity of the hamstring injury. This from Brooke Pryor of ESPN:

“A league source told ESPN that Pickens has a grade 2 hamstring strain.”

Unless Pickens worsened his injury while testing it before the Browns game, the severity of the injury seems to not match up with how the Steelers handled the situation. A grade 2 hamstring strain can have players miss multiple weeks, and the way the Steelers handled the situation wouldn’t suggest an injury of that severity.

Mike Tomlin said he would update the injury status on Tuesday during his weekly press conference, and Pickens’ injury wasn’t the only one which will need updating by the Steelers head coach.

The only in-game injury to a player who wasn’t able to return was a groin injury to defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi. Ogunjobi tried to return to the game, but eventually was ruled out. If there is a silver lining to this injury, assuming Ogunjobi might miss some time, is the depth the Steelers have at the position. Sunday the Steelers made veteran Dean Lowry inactive, and Montravius Adams, who is in the team’s 21-day window to return from Injured Reserve (IR) could return at any point once the team deems he is ready. In other words, they have the players ready to help ease the blow of missing Ogunjobi if the injury calls for him to miss time.

Another in-game injury, but not one which forced the player out of the game, was to cornerback Donte Jackson. Jackson was labeled as having a back injury, but Jackson told reporters after the game he was having back spasms, and he should be okay. Just like the injury to Ogunjobi, if Jackson has to miss any time, the fact the team just added Cory Trice from IR last week will help with the depth at the cornerback position.

All things considered, the Steelers still are in a good spot, from an injury perspective, but the injury to Pickens will be the most important injury to keep tabs on as the team prepares for Week 15.
