The best quarterbacks from 2023 the Steelers are set to face in 2024
After taking a look at the top rushers (check that out HERE) and receivers (check that out HERE) from 2023 who are scheduled to face the Steelers in 2024, today it’s time to check out the quarterbacks who are on the Steelers schedule this season who finished toward the top of the yardage standings last year. As I said before, there could be injuries, trades, benchings, or holdouts which could make these players not able to see the field when they face the Black & Gold. But for now, these things can’t be known for sure.
This list consists of players who had at least 3,000 passing yards in 2023, their overall rank in yardage last season, and the week in which they will face the Steelers. While the Steelers are set to face quarterbacks Joe Burrow and Dehsaun Watson both twice this season, neither player landed on this list due to missing seven and eleven games respectively.
Dak Prescott (3rd)
Dallas Cowboys
Week 5
With 4,516 passing yards in 2023, Dak Prescott actually had the most completions of any quarterback last season with 410. With 36 touchdowns to only nine interceptions, Prescott had impressive numbers from his 2023 campaign. But the team results at home are much different than on the road, and the Cowboys have to travel to Pittsburgh this season. Prescott is only faced the Steelers once in his career and it was eight years ago in Pittsburgh where the Cowboys came away with a a 35–30 victory where he threw for 319 yards and two touchdowns on 22 completions from 32 passing attempts.
Patrick Mahomes (6th)
Kansas City Chiefs
Week 17
Even though he was only sixth in passing yards last year, the Pittsburgh Steelers know they have a formidable opponent when they face Patrick Mahomes on Christmas Day. Throwing for 4,183 yards in 16 games, Mahomes has never lost to the Steelers and has thrown 14 touchdowns to one interception in the three matchups. Mahomes threw for six touchdowns the first time he faced the Steelers in Week 2 of 2018 and added three more the day after Christmas in 2021. Mahomes also had five passing touchdowns along with an interception when they knocked the Steelers out of the playoffs in Ben Roethlisberger’s final game in the 2021 postseason.
Jalen Hurts (14th)
Philadelphia Eagles
Week 15
Passing for 3,858 yards with 23 touchdowns and 15 interceptions, Jalen Hurts will have the responsibility of keeping a 60 year streak of defeating the Steelers in Philadelphia alive. With the Steelers going to Philly in 2022 with the expanded 17 game schedule, Hurts defeated the Steelers by completing four touchdown passes on 285 yards on only 19 completions. Hurts did attempt one pass which he completed for 18 yards when Philadelphia traveled to Pittsburgh in 2020, but Carson Wentz was the starter as the Steelers won that matchup 38–29.
Lamar Jackson (15th)
Baltimore Ravens
Week 11, Week 16
Even though he’s the NFL’s reigning MVP, Lamar Jackson was only 15th in passing yards last season. Appearing in 16 games, Jackson once again missed a Steelers matchup which has been a theme over his career. In five full seasons as a starter, Jackson has only faced the Steelers four times and has never done so twice in a season. Winning his first start in Pittsburgh in 2019 where he only had 161 passing yards with one passing touchdown and three interceptions, Jackson has lost his last three starts against the Steelers. In all, Jackson only has four touchdowns to seven interceptions against Pittsburgh.
Gardner Minshew (17th)
Las Vegas Raiders
Week 6
Although who the starter will be in Las Vegas is not known at this time, Gardner Minshew did have over 3000 passing yards last season for the Indianapolis Colts in his 13 starts. Minshew actually racked up 3,305 passing yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Whether or not he will get the nod in Las Vegas is yet to be determined, but Minshew still qualifies for this list. Appearing in a game against the Steelers in 2022 with the Philadelphia Eagles, Minshew was not the starter but completed one of two passes for 23 yards. Last season Minshew defeated the Steelers as the Colts quarterback where he threw for 215 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions.
Justin Herbert (15th)
Los Angles Chargers
Week 3
Despite only appearing in 13 games last season, Justin Herbert still put up 3,134 passing yards with 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Herbert also defeated the Steelers and his only game in 2021 when he threw for 382 yards on 30 completions with three touchdowns in an interception in LA.
