Steelers vs. Ravens Recap: Steelers win ugly vs. the Ravens in Week 11

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Baltimore Ravens renewed their rivalry in 2024 when the two AFC North teams clashed in Pittsburgh for the first time this regular season. The Steelers had won 7 of their last 8 games vs. the Ravens, and this would be a difficult contest for both teams who have 7 wins under their belt entering the Week 11 game.

Those are just some of the storylines in the game, so let’s get to the recap.

1st Quarter

The Steelers won the opening coin toss and chose to defer their possession to the second half. The Ravens started with the football, and on the third play of the game Nick Herbig forced a fumble on Derrick Henry which was recovered by DeShon Elliott.

The Steelers took their first possession of the game well inside Baltimore territory, and were able to move into the red-zone. But that was where the drive would stall, ending in a Chris Boswell field goal. The kick was good, making the score 3-0 with 10:40 left in the first quarter.

The Ravens and Steelers offenses failed to get a first down on their second possession, and it was Baltimore who got their offense going next. On the third Ravens possession it was a Lamar Jackson pass to Isaiah Likely for 42 yards which put the Ravens in field goal range. The Steelers defense did the job on 3rd down and forced a field goal attempt by Justin Tucker, but Tucker’s 47-yard kicked missed wide left, keeping the score 3-0.

The next drive saw the Steelers nearing midfield and facing a 3rd and short. The quarterback sneak by Russell Wilson was stopped short, and Mike Tomlin gambled by going for it on 4th down. The Ravens stood tall, and got the turnover on downs in Pittsburgh territory.

Another field goal attempt resulted, and it was another Justin Tucker missed field goal. The 50-yard miss gave the Steelers the football back with a 3-point lead, but they could do nothing offensively and were set to punt at the end of the 1st quarter.

Score after the 1st Quarter: Steelers 3, Ravens 0

2nd Quarter

The Steelers punted to start the 3rd quarter, and the defense continued to stand tall when it mattered most, forcing another Baltimore punt.

The Pittsburgh offense finally woke up, and was able to drive the ball from the 15-yard line into field goal range. The Steelers’ 3rd down offense was continually bad, and relied on a 52-yard Chris Boswell field goal to make the score 6-0 with 7:39 left in the first half.

The high-flying Ravens offense continued to struggle, but so did the Steelers offense as both teams exchanged punts in the 2nd quarter.

Baltimore would finally get on the scoreboard on their next drive. Big Jackson completions to Likely and Rashod Bateman moved the ball into the red-zone. From there, it was Derrick Henry who took care of the rest, rumbling into the end-zone for the first touchdown of the game.

Trailing 7-6 with 1:16 left in the half, the Steelers latest 3-and-out gave the Ravens the ball inside a minute to play. A screen to Isaiah Likely was stripped, and recovered, by Patrick Queen.

The Steelers offense was set up just outside the red-zone, but it was nothing more than another Boswell field goal which resulted in a 9-7 lead.

That score would hold into halftime.

Score at Halftime: Steelers 9, Ravens 7

3rd Quarter

The Steelers started with the football in the second half, and the drive was very much like what fans saw in the first half. The team didn’t abandon the run, but struggled on 3rd downs. When all was said and done, it was another Chris Boswell field goal, this from 57, to make the score 12-7 in the early portion of the 3rd quarter.

Baltimore took over for their first possession of the second half, and it was a time-consuming drive which inched closer and closer to Tucker’s field goal range. On 3rd and 10, pressure got to Jackson, and his pass was incomplete. The result was Tucker’s first field goal of the game, this from 54-yards, to make the score 12-10 Steelers with 6:12 remaining in the quarter.

Needing to have an offensive drive, the Steelers started at their 30 and slowly churned out yards. It was also when Russell Wilson and George Pickens started to warm up when the offense got moving. Nothing was better than this 37-yard pass and catch from Wilson to Pickens to set up the offense in the red-zone.

Just like all the other Steelers red-zone trips this game, the end result was a Chris Boswell field goal, making the score 15-10 with just 56 second left in the quarter.

That score would hold heading into the 4th quarter.

Score after the 3rd Quarter: Steelers 15, Ravens 10

4th Quarter

The first play of the quarter was a 3rd and 11 for Baltimore, and the Pittsburgh defense got off the field.

Started at their 32, the Steelers put together their best drive of the day. It was a tremendous mix of running and passing to get the team into a first-and-goal situation. However, unlike past red-zone trips, this one ended in a turnover when Russell Wilson’s pass was intercepted by Marlon Humphrey on 3rd and goal.

Lamar Jackson’s 32 yard run to start the next drive moved the ball near midfield. However, it was a unlikely source on the Steelers defense who got the ball back. On a wheel route to Justice Hill, Payton Wilson ripped the ball away for the interception.

The turnover gave the Steelers the football, and they did what they’d done all second half. Move the ball, but fail to score a touchdown. This time it was a 50-yard Chris Boswell field goal to make the score 18-10 with 3:35 left in the final quarter in regulation.

Jackson and the Ravens offense moved the ball near midfield at the two-minute warning, and it was a big screen play to Justice Hill for 24 yards which moved the Ravens near the red-zone. Two plays later it was Lamar hitting Zay Flowers for the touchdown.

They would go for two, to tie the game, and it was Joey Porter Jr. who came up with the tackle on Lamar Jackson negating the play.

With 1:06 left to play, the Steelers clung to an 18-16 lead with the Ravens having all three of their timeouts remaining. Needing just one first down to ice the win, Justin Fields entered the game and the offense was able to get the yards necessary to win.

The win equated in the Steelers’ 8th win of the season, and a 1.5 game lead in the AFC North.

FINAL SCORE: Steelers 18, Ravens 16
