Steelers vs. Raiders, Week 6: Recap and Highlights after the Steelers win

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Las Vegas Raiders squared off in Week 6, and both teams were desperately in need of a victory. The Steelers, who traveled to Las Vegas, had lost two consecutive games after starting the year 3-0, and the Raiders have had an up-and-down season and turned to Aidan O’Connell to start at quarterback Sunday.

These were just some of the storylines heading into the game, but it’s time to recap what went down, by quarter, with highlights. Let’s start the recap…

1st Quarter

The Steelers started with the football after losing the opening coin toss, and a promising drive which quickly moved across midfield stalled out as they entered field goal range. Two negative plays equated in a 52-yard Chris Boswell field goal to give the Steelers a quick 3-0 lead.

Las Vegas took the ball for their first possession, and dominated the Steelers throughout the entire drive. They had their way with the Steelers, and ran it down the Pittsburgh Steelers’ front until Alexander Mattison punched it in to give the Raiders a 7-3 lead.

After both teams exchanged 3-and-outs, the Steelers had the ball as the first quarter came to an end.

Score after the 1st Quarter: Raiders 7, Steelers 3

2nd Quarter

The Steelers had the football to start the 2nd quarter, and were able to put together a scoring drive, but for the second time they wasted plays like this Najee Harris run, and settled for a field goal.

Boswell’s second field goal was good, making the score 7-6.

Both teams exchanged possessions before the Raiders got the football with 4:37 remaining in the half. On the drive it was T.J. Watt who caused the game’s first takeaway with a forced fumble.

After the takeaway, it looked as if the Steelers did the unthinkable and gave the ball right back via interception, but the play was negated after a roughing the passer call on a late hit on Fields.

This gave the Steelers new life, and set up a 4th and 1, where Fields did the rest.

The Steelers went for two, but failed, making the score 13-7. That score would hold.

Score at Halftime: Steelers 12, Raiders 7

3rd Quarter

The Raiders started with the football, and their drive looked to end the way they had throughout the entire second quarter; however, the punt was blocked be Jeremiah Moon.

The blocked punt gave the Steelers offense tremendous field position, but they squandered the field position and had to settle for another Boswell field goal. The 37-yard kick made the score 15-7.

Another defensive stop gave the Steelers offense the ball back, and thanks to another Raiders personal foul it extended the drive and gave the Steelers new life. How did the drive end? With the first rushing touchdown by a non-quarterback of the season with Najee Harris having himself a big day.

Boswell’s extra point was good, making the score 22-7.

The Raiders moved the ball quickly down the field and got into the red-zone to end the 3rd quarter.

Score after the 3rd Quarter: Steelers 22, Raiders 7

4th Quarter

The Raiders saw a 3rd and goal in the early portions of the quarter, and the Steelers took the ball away again via another T.J. Watt forced fumble.

The recovery by DeShon Elliott gave the Steelers yet another takeaway, and the offense a chance to add to their point total. They weren’t able to score points, but they were able to move the ball and flip the field.

With 9:17 left in regulation, the Raiders were backed up in their own end and O’Connell was intercepted by Donte Jackson on 3rd down.

Jackson returned the ball inside the 10, and the next offensive play saw Justin Fields run it in for his second rushing touchdown of the game.

Boswell’s extra point made the score 29-7.

Against the Steelers’ prevent defense, O’Connell was able to orchestrate a scoring drive which was capped off by a 4th and 2 completion to Wilkerson for the Raiders’ second touchdown of the game.

Vegas decided to go for the two-point conversion, but failed, making the score 29-13 with 4:54 left in regulation.

The Steelers were able to move the ball down the field, mainly through a Fields to Pickens pass to get the ball inside the 10-yard line. However, the offense couldn’t punch the ball into the end-zone, and equated in another Boswell field goal. The chip shot made the score 32-13 with 3:55 left in the 4th quarter.

This final score would hold, and the Steelers were able to break their two-game losing streak in Week 6.

FINAL SCORE: Steelers 32, Raiders 13
