Steelers vs. Lions, Preseason Week 3: Final Score and Highlights

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions went head-to-head in Week 3 of the NFL Preseason, this game taking place in Detroit at Ford Field. While the Steelers franchise has fond memories of this stadium, they were more focused on performing well in this preseason finale after starting the preseason 0-2. After losses to the Houston Texans in Week 1 and the Buffalo Bills in Week 2, both at home, could the Steelers break into the win column in the final dress rehearsal?

In this article we will highlight the most important aspect of the game, the highlights. By quarter we will have big plays, including scoring plays, right here as well as score updates as the game progresses.

1st Quarter

The Steelers started with the football and great field position after the Lions opening kick didn’t get to the landing zone, giving Pittsburgh the ball at the 40-yard line. A 32-yard pass from Russell Wilson to George Pickens on 3rd and 11 moved the chains, and then it was Cordarrelle Patterson off to the races for 30-yards for the first score of the game, giving the Steelers an early 7-0 lead.

On the next series, it was a sack party for the Steelers. Nick Herbig notched two sacks on the drive, and it was capped off with a Herbig strip sack which was recovered by Dean Lowry.

Justin Fields entered the game on offense, and it took just a handful of plays before Le’Mical Perine plunged into the end-zone for the second Steelers touchdown making the score 14-0.

2nd Quarter

The second quarter saw both teams start to get their back-ups in the game, and the scoring subsided drastically. However, it was Detroit who struck next when Hooker found Funk for the touchdown

The touchdown made the score 14-7 with just over two minutes remaining in the first half.

Starting with great field position after the kickoff went out of bounds, Kyle Allen was sacked and fumbled which was recovered by Detroit.

Detroit quickly turned the turnover into a touchdown, tying the game heading into halftime.

3rd Quarter

Detroit started the second half with the football, and Hooker and company continued to move the ball with ease against the Steelers’ 3rd string defense. Nonetheless, their opening drive of the second half ended in a missed field goal, keeping the score 14-14.

The Steelers took their next drive and were able to move the ball into field goal range when Kyle Allen hit Dez Fitzpatrick for a 60-yard gain. The drive ended in a Matthew Wright chip shot, making the score 17-14.

4th Quarter

The Lions had the football in scoring position next, and they took advantage of the possession and turned it into their first lead of the game. The running touchdown equated in a 21-17 lead for Detroit.

Another Detroit field goal made the lead a full 7-point lead, and the Steelers were running out of time to come back with JR Plumlee at quarterback. Time would run out on the Steelers, and they would be unable to get off the field in the 4th quarter when it mattered most.
