Steelers vs. Jets, Week 7: Recap and highlights after the Steelers prime time win

The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the Sunday Night Football showdown with a 4-2 record, and the visiting New York Jets with a 2-4 record. But you wouldn’t know it when it comes to the narratives and storylines heading into the game. Not only were the Steelers a 2-point favorite at home, but the national attention has been on Davante Adams re-joining Aaron Rodgers. The Steelers main talking points have all been focused on the quarterback position and Russell Wilson getting his first start of the season over Justin Fields.

These were just some of the storylines heading into the game, but it’s time to recap what went down, by quarter, with highlights. Let’s start the recap…

1st Quarter

The Steelers lost the opening coin toss, and the Jets chose to defer their possession to the second half. For the second straight game the Steelers were able to put points on the board with their first drive of the game. And for the second straight game the first points were a Chris Boswell field goal. The 46-yard kick was good, making the score 3-0.

A Larry Ogunjobi sack of Aaron Rodgers on 3rd down gave the ball right back to the Steelers.

Unfortunately, the Steelers only had three more plays before giving Rodgers and company their second possession of the game. The next drive for the Jets, which was aided by a questionable personal foul call on Larry Ogunjobi, ended in the first touchdown of the game. The time-consuming drive was capped off a a Breece Hall 13-yard touchdown run.

Both teams exchanged 3-and-out drives before the first quarter ended.

Score after the 1st Quarter: Jets 7, Steelers 3

2nd Quarter

The Steelers had the ball to start the second quarter, but neither team were able to do anything with their drives to start the quarter. The next points came from a familiar source, Chris Boswell. The 29-yard chip shot made the score 7-6.

To answer, the Jets put together another touchdown drive, which was set up by the checkdown to Breece Hall which went for 57.

The result of that drive was an Aaron Rodgers touchdown pass to Conklin.

The Jets went for two, and got it, making the score 15-6.

Another stalled drive gave the ball back to Rodgers, but it was the veteran quarterback who made the first mistake of the game. With a chance to really put the Steelers behind, it was rookie Beanie Bishop who picked off Rodgers.

After a defensive pass interference call moved the ball into the red-zone, it was Wilson to George Pickens to the Steelers first touchdown of the game.

Boswell’s extra point was good, making the score 15-13 with just under a minute left in the half, and the score would hold.

Score at Halftime: Jets 15, Steelers 13

3rd Quarter

Rodgers and company started with the football to start the second half, but their opening drive stalled near midfield and resulted in a punt. The Steelers put together a tremendous drive with two huge 3rd down conversions, on to George Pickens…

…and one to Pat Freiermuth…

It set up a 1st and goal, but the stellar drive ended in a deflating Boswell chip shot to make the score 16-15.

The ensuing Jets drive ended quickly when Rodgers was picked off for the second time, again by Beanie Bishop. The pass deflected off Garrett Wilson’s shoulder, and was picked off and returned to the 1-yard line by the undrafted rookie.

One play later it was Russell Wilson who plunged into the end zone for the TD.

With the score now 23-15, the Jets offense continued to be able to move the ball, but were unable to add points to their total. On this drive it was a blocked field goal, this by Dean Lowry.

Pittsburgh continued to possess the ball at the end of the quarter.

Score after 3rd Quarter: Steelers 23, Jets 15

4th Quarter

The Steelers started to impose their will on the Jets defense, and the end result of the drive was Van Jefferson’s first touchdown of the season.

The extra point was good, making the score 30-15.

Desperately needing a touchdown, the Jets were entering go-for-it mode; however, several third down conversions put them in field goal range. Needing a touchdown, the Jets went for it on 4th and 4, and the pass was batted down at the line of scrimmage by Keeanu Benton. The turnover on downs gave the Steelers the ball back with 7:53 left in regulation.

The Steelers took their next possession, and didn’t give the ball back. The team drove into Jets territory, and eventually into field goal range. But they didn’t stop there, and even went for it on 4th and short and converted. With just a minute left in the game, the Steelers faced a 4th and 1, and they gave it to Najee Harris who ran it in for the touchdown.

With only 26 seconds left, the final score would hold.

FINAL SCORE: Steelers 37, Jets 15
