Steelers vs. Cowboys, Week 5: Final Score and Highlights
The Pittsburgh Steelers and Dallas Cowboys went head-to-head in Week 5 on Sunday Night Football in Pittsburgh. The Steelers entered the game hoping they can get back in the win column after losing their first game of the season to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 4. The Cowboys, still searching for a level of consistency, entered the game without their two edge pass rushers and hopes of righting their proverbial ship.
These were just some of the storylines in the AFC/NFC rivalry in prime time, so it’s time to go back through the game and update you with big plays which can determine the outcome of the game.
Let’s get to the recap…
1st Quarter
The Cowboys won the opening coin toss and chose to start with the football. Following a decent kickoff return the Cowboys were able to move into kicker Brandon Aubrey’s field goal range. His 55-yard field goal was good, giving the Cowboys an early 3-0 lead.
Pittsburgh’s first possession was similar to the Cowboys’, but only in the end result. The longer drive stalled just outside the red-zone and ended in a 41-yard Chris Boswell field goal, tying the game 3-3.
Both teams exchanged 3-and-outs, and it was Dallas who threatened to add points to their total. However, when in the red-zone on 3rd down Dak Prescott was sacked by T.J. Watt and Nick Herbig. The sack also forced a fumble, which Herbig was able to recover, giving the Steelers their first takeaway in the past three games.

Score after the 1st Quarter: Steelers 3, Cowboys 3
2nd Quarter
Pittsburgh’s offense was unable to turn the takeaway into points, and gave the ball right back to the Cowboys offense.
Dak Prescott and company moved the ball quickly, again, into Steelers territory and all the way into the red-zone. It was a current theme with the Steelers defensive secondary with blown coverages.

The Steelers bend, don’t break defense continued to do their thing and force another Aubrey field goal. The chip shot was good, making the score 6-3 with just under 9 minutes remaining in the half.
Another failed Pittsburgh drive gave the ball back to Prescott and the Cowboys, who moved the ball as they had all half. But, just like has happened all half, the drive stalled in the red-zone. A broken play in the secondary got the offense another big chunk play.

Score at Halftime: Cowboys 6, Steelers 3
3rd Quarter
The Steelers started the second half with the football, and after a roughing the passer call knocked Fields from the game for two plays as a precautionary concussion check, it was Kyle Allen who provided a spark. His throw to Pat Freiermuth got the Steelers moving, and when Fields returned to the game he took the baton and ran with it.
Fields got the offense into the red-zone, and once there he delivered the strike to Connor Heyward for the touchdown.

Chris Boswell’s point-after was good, making the score 10-6 with 11:50 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
The Pittsburgh secondary continued to surrender big play after big play in the game, and another strike from Prescott set up the Cowboys in the red-zone.

Like a broken record, when the field got short the Steelers defense made plays. After a T.J. Watt and Nick Herbig sack stopped the drive, Bradon Aubrey’s 38-yard attempt was blocked by Isaiahh Loudermilk. It was the third time they were in scoring range and left with zero points.

Just like all other turnovers, the Steelers weren’t able to take advantage and put points on the board. Instead, they had to settle on a field-flipping drive. But the Cowboys moved the ball on the Pittsburgh defense and were threatening once again when the quarter ended.
Score after the 3rd Quarter: Steelers 10, Cowboys 6
4th Quarter
The quarter started with Dallas just outside the red-zone, but took just one play to get into the red area. The next play Prescott hit running back Rico Dowdle for the Cowboys first touchdown of the game to cap off the 90-yard drive.

Needing an answer to the Dallas touchdown, the Steelers could only muster three plays before giving the ball right back to the Cowboys.
When Prescott took another shot down the field, this time it was was intercepted by Joey Porter Jr., the third takeaway of the night.

For the first time in this game the Steelers were able to turn the takeaway into points. But it wasn’t just a game-tying Chris Boswell field goal, it was a touchdown. After several key conversions, the Steelers found themselves inside the 10-yard line. On 2nd down it was a shovel pass to Pat Freiermuth for the score.

The Boswell point after made the score 17-13 with 5 minutes remaining in regulation.
Dallas continued to carve up the Steelers offense and set up a 1st and goal situation with just over 1 minute left. Three straight stops, including this amazing hit by Elandon Roberts…
