Steelers vs. Chargers, Week 3: Final Score and Highlights

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Los Angeles Chargers went head-to-head in Week 3 of the 2024 NFL regular season, and it was the home opener for the Steelers at Acrisure Stadium. When it came to storylines in this game, there were plenty. Both teams entered the game with a 2-0 record, injuries were a huge talking point between Troy Fautanu being placed on Injured Reserve (IR) and Justin Herbert’s high ankle sprain. Nonetheless, the Greg Roman led Chargers offense was looking to run all over the Steelers in front of their home crowd, but would the Steelers be able to stop them and answer with an offense barrage of their own?

Will the Steelers advance to 3-0, or will the it be the Chargers who remain undefeated?

Those aren’t all the headlines heading into the game, but here we let you know how the game went down by quarter, sharing highlights alone the way.

Let’s get to the breakdown:

1st Quarter

The Steelers win the coin loss and defer to the second half. Both teams traded three and outs twice, but on the fifth drive of the game the Chargers get two first downs before taking advantage of a blown coverage for a 27-yard touchdown pass.

The Steelers get two first downs and have the ball just across midfield as the quarter comes to an end.

Score after the 1st Quarter: Steelers 0, Chargers 7


2nd Quarter

The Steelers continue their drive and convert a 3rd & 4 with a 20-yard catch and run by Scottie Miller that put the Steelers into the red zone. Three plays later it was Justin Fields calling his own number to tie the game.

The Chargers offense responds with their first trip into the red zone, but the Steelers defense stiffens and holds them to a field goal. Both teams trade punts inside of 2:00 and Chris Boswell misses a 62-yard attempt to the right. With 0:01 on the clock the Chargers had time for one Hail Mary throw which falls incomplete to end the half.

Score at Halftime: Steelers 7, Chargers 10


3rd Quarter

The Steelers moved the opening drive down the field and tied it up with a 38-yard Boswell field goal. A great bouncing kickoff and coverage coupled with a Nick Herbig sack got the Steelers the ball in Chargers territory after the three and out.

But on the first play a bouncing ball ended up in the hands of former Steeler Bud Dupree for the Steelers first turnover of the season.

The Chargers go three and out after the takeaway after and Elandon Roberts sack hobbles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert. The Steelers end the quarter tied and driving.

4th Quarter

The Steelers move into the red zone but still again. Boswell’s 30-yarder gives the Steelers their first lead of the day. Tyler Heinicke enters for Justin Herbert and moves the ball to midfield before T.J. Watt ends the drive with a third-down sack.

On the ensuing possession, Justin Fields hit Calvin Austin over the middle and he takes it to the house for the 55-yard touchdown.

On the Chargers next offensive play, Nick Herbig got his second sack of the day.

Two plays later Cam Heyward got in on the sack party to end the drive.

The Steelers ran out the last 4:49 of the game with Najee Harris and Cordarrelle Patterson taking the Steelers down to the 1-yard line to take a knee to finish it out.

FINAL SCORE: Steelers 20, Chargers 10
