Steelers vs. Bills, Preseason Week 2: Final Score and Highlights

The Pittsburgh Steelers will host two of their three 2024 preseason games, and this is the second, and final, preseason game at Acrisure Stadium. The Buffalo Bills invade Pittsburgh with both teams looking for their first victory of the exhibition season, but also to get their starters more work than they did in the previous week.

This was the first game action for many of the Steelers starters, including quarterback Russell Wilson, and the hope is the team can build off the success they saw in Preseason Week 1, despite that effort resulting in a 20-12 loss to the Houston Texans.

In this article we will highlight the most important aspect of the game, the highlights. By quarter we will have big plays, including scoring plays, right here as well as score updates as the game progresses.

Let the 2024 season begin!

1st Quarter

The Steelers started with the football, but it resulted in a quick three-and-out. However, with Josh Allen sitting out of the game, Mitch Trubisky took over at quarterback, and it was Nick Herbig who came up big on 3rd down.

Sacks were the name of the game, and the Bills also got in on the mix with Greg Rousseau abusing Broderick Jones to sack Russell Wilson.

That was essentially the only highlight of the first quarter, which was filled with sloppy offense and punts.

Score after the 1st Quarter: 0-0

2nd Quarter

The quarter started with the Bill having the football, but something Steelers fans have seen a lot of is Mitch Trubisky throwing interceptions. This one was caught by Miles Killebrew for the first turnover of the game.

The Steelers took the turnover and got into Chris Boswell’s field goal range, but Boswell’s kick hit the left upright. With new life, Trubisky drove the offense into the red-zone, but had to settle for a field goal to make the score 3-0.

Facing a 1:17 left in the half and with one timeout, Justin Fields was able to drive the Steelers down the field and get the offense into field goal range. It was capped off with a Chris Boswell 42-yard field goal, making the score 3-3, which would hold until halftime.

Halftime Score: 3-3

3rd Quarter

The first drive of the second half saw the Bills with Ben DiNucci at quarterback orchestrate a scoring drive which featured all runs outside of a 3rd down incompletion which led to another Bass field goal. The kick made the score 6-3 in the Bills’ favor.

The next drive was the Steelers first of the second half, and Justin Fields remained under center for the offense. To this point there weren’t a lot of big plays made on offense, but Fields created one when he hit Connor Heyward on a bootleg roll out for a large gain.

Nonetheless, the possession resulted in a 4th and 2 inside the 10-yard line, where Mike Tomlin elected to go for it. The play went for a loss of 8 and a turnover on downs.

The Bills would have their next drive continue into the 4th quarter.

Score at the end of the 3rd Quarter: Bills 6, Steelers 3

4th Quarter

It was more of the Buffalo running game which was showcased as the Bills ran their way into field goal range once again. However, the Steelers defense held the opposition into another field goal, and Bass’s kick made the score 9-3.

It would just take a touchdown drive for the Steelers to take the lead, and it seemed as if Fields was more than capable of making this a reality. Then, when you see him complete a rather remarkable play, it looked as if it was just a matter of time.

However, a poor spot on a 2nd down run equated in a 3rd and 1 which was stopped for a loss of two. On 4th and 3 Fields’ pass fell incomplete, turning it over on downs for the second time in the game.

When it looked as if the game would be iced away, the Steelers defense got off the field and back in the hands of Justin Fields with just under 2 minutes left in the game and a chance to win the game. It ended predictably, with a failed 4th down conversion.

Final Score: Bills 9, Steelers 3
