— Joe Rutter (@tribjoerutter) August 1, 2023
Cam Heyward on today's first padded practice: "Every year, there's always the chippiness."
A few player predictions on first camp tussle:
• Connor vs Cam Heyward (from Cam lol)
• Nick vs Nate Herbig (Breiden Fehoko)
• DeMarvin Leal vs ? ("He's a firecracker" – Mark Robinson)— Brian Batko (@BrianBatko) August 1, 2023

No Damontae Kazee today. Alfonzo Graham is also here still in his sling.
Looks like just those two not practicing.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Patrick Peterson hyped up today. Ready to ‘play real football.”
Will be his first padded practice as a Steeler. The reason he came here?

Ike Taylor putting his scout hat on and chopping it up with Patrick Peterson today at Steelers practice. We talked about that and more on today’s @PGSportsNow show. Check it out while we wait for the action to heat up in Latrobe: https://t.co/R8PL6YbE6S pic.twitter.com/VaxC6MbHW4

— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Same play. Najee Harris gets another carry and powers through Cam Heyward behind Daniels into the endzone. 2-0 offense.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Kenny Pickett tries a fade ball to Pat Freiermuth. Good play but Patrick Peterson in great coverage. Breaks it up. 2-1 offense.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Pickett feels the rush up the middle from Benton, Herbig meets him outside the pocket and he throws it away over the head of Pickens. 2-2.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Mitch Trubisky steps back to pass and looks for Gentry but throws it behind him after Elijah Riley comes screaming off the edge on a slot blitz. 3-2 defense.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
RB Darius Hagans gets a handoff and gets cut off at the legs from Watts and Muse but powers through it and falls forward into the endzone. 3-3
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Connor Heyward the RB. Play action from Trubisky who scrambles out and hits Dez Fitzpatrick who toe taps. But Fitzpatrick is out with Trice in coverage.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Defense wins the first padded 7 shots 4-3. Pickett’s group went 2/4 with two TDs up the middle to Najee Harris on the first two attempts.
— Brooke Pryor (@bepryor) August 1, 2023
Darnell Washington’s first backs on backers rep comes against TJ Watt. The rookie does a pretty good job of holding the former DPOY off. Tomlin creating interesting competition early.
— Brooke Pryor (@bepryor) August 1, 2023
Elandon Roberts just DESTROYED one of the new RBs. Goodness gracious. Trucked him into the ground.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Not a good day for John Lovett. Pancaked by Roberts and Robinson in back to back reps. Wow.
— Mark Kaboly (@MarkKaboly) August 1, 2023
Darnell Washington has just beat T.J. Watt yet again.
Washington 2-0 abasing Watt in the pass blocking drill.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Darnell Washington got Alex Highsmith now. Highsmith wins that rep. Nasty cross chop.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Nick Herbig running through Connor Heyward with a long arm 🤔
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Elandon Roberts is a beast. Nearly just ran over Anthony McFarland. The pair go again and Roberts muscles by him.
— Brooke Pryor (@bepryor) August 1, 2023
Nick Herbig’s ghost move is real. He slips right under Darnell Washington.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Kenny Robinson and Keanu Neal starting safeties in the first team period with Damontae Kazee injured and Minkah Fitzpatrick still absent.
— Brooke Pryor (@bepryor) August 1, 2023
Isaac Seumalo and Pat Freiermuth push entire DL back and Jaylen Warren darts through untouched. 40 yard rip on the ground.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Jaylen Warren breaks off a big run in the first team period. A training camp breakout a year ago, Warren has a lot of fans in the crowd at Latrobe.
— Brooke Pryor (@bepryor) August 1, 2023
Steelers just worked a PA crossing concept off their OZ run game. Hits Cody White wide open over the middle.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Kwon Alexander comes in through the B gap and smokes Darius Hagans. He said he just hits. Laid him out.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Keeanu Benton run defense ⬆️
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
There’s a blur on the field today named Kwon Alexander. Dude either has fresh legs, is that quick to diagnose, or selling out to announce his presence with authority. Or all the above.
— James C Wexell (@jimwexell) August 1, 2023
Mason Rudolph gets stepped on by a linemen and falls, the timing of the play is off and goes off the RBs hands on a handoff and directly into the hands of Tanner Muse. One of the weirdest plays I’ve ever seen.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Looks like the right leg actually. Trice being helped off by trainers. Not putting much weight on it. Going off in the back of the cart. https://t.co/tFkqjdNR6P pic.twitter.com/JnrkMuUnmw
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
First sack for T.J. Watt. Gets around Okorafor.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Kenny Pickett on the run fading away makes a nice throw to George Pickens in coverage. Good ball placement.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Every rep George Pickens goes against Joey Porter Jr: 🍿🍿🍿pic.twitter.com/fy36VvuJX3
— Brooke Pryor (@bepryor) August 1, 2023
Joey Porter picks Mitch Trubisky intended for Cody White. One-on-one down the sideline and Porter just went up and got it.
— Dale Lolley (@dlolley_pgh) August 1, 2023
Man Breiden Fehoko just swallows double teams. He’s a certified boon for the run defense.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
George Pickens is running a much fuller route tree so far this training camp. Running plenty of gos but plenty of in-breaking routes, comebacks, curls, etc.
More diverse route tree.

Connor Heyward getting his right ankle taped right now. Turned it in a drill. pic.twitter.com/GZ31LIjLQ9
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Broderick Jones went 4/4 on wins in one on ones. Really good showing for the rookie.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Liked seeing what Armon Watts could do. Cross chop and club-rip looked good live. Won most of his reps. Has some nice explosiveness.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Broderick Jones getting some first team reps.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Diontae Johnson shakes off Patrick Peterson for a TD reception from Kenny Pickett. Looked like it should’ve been OPI, but refs are here and they didn’t throw a flag.
— Brooke Pryor (@bepryor) August 1, 2023
Darnell Washington touchdown. Caught a jump ball over James Pierre.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
That’s it for the first padded practice. Two key stories that stand out.
– Cory Trice injury
– George Pickens is an alien pic.twitter.com/yaP2FECqDg
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Darnell Washington without the pads on isn’t Darnell Washington. Negates his biggest strength. He looked good today.
— Nick Farabaugh (@FarabaughFB) August 1, 2023
Coach Mike Tomlin said he doesn’t have any more information on the non-contact injury suffered by rookie Cory Trice in practice.
