Steelers Stock Report: Whose stock is rising after training camp

The Pittsburgh Steelers have wrapped up their 2024 training camp, and that means it’s time to track who has done well, stock up, and who hasn’t, stock down, as the team heads back to Pittsburgh to finish out the preseason.

As always, these are just my lists, so feel free to voice your opinion in the comment section below.

Stock Rising

Najee Harris

During Najee’s first three years in Pittsburgh he has been known to be downtrodden and even cold to media. While he was never called a bad teammate, he wasn’t voted a team captain after his one year stint in 2022. However, that has all changed ahead of 2024. He hasn’t adjusted towards the media, but all accounts are he is all-in on 2024. My what a contract year will do…

Van Jefferson

Everyone has focused on who the Steelers might bring in, yet many overlooked who they already have on their roster. Jefferson has played well through it all, and looks to prove his worth on the field in 2024.

Justin Fields

When Russell Wilson’s calf kept him out of practice, Fields took full advantage. As Tomlin says, “One man’s misfortune is another’s opportunity.” Fields took the chance and put his best foot forward, but still has a lot to prove in the final two weeks of the preseason. However, at camp the narrative surrounding Fields certainly did change, for the better.

Rookies

While Roman Wilson (ankle) has been out since the first padded practice, the other rookies have shined during camp. Troy Fautanu, Zach Frazier, Payton Wilson and others have gotten rave reviews. Living up to the hype? Still a long way to go, but a positive step in the right direction.

Arthur Smith Offense

When we’re talking small sample size, it doesn’t get much smaller than what we’ve seen in-stadium for Arthur Smith’s offense. However, what we’ve seen so far has been a pleasant surprise. Play-action passes, different run schemes, and motion with the intention of maximizing matchups. It’s been a breath of fresh air, so far.

Beanie Bishop

With Cam Sutton being suspended for the first 8 games of the 2024 season, the question was, “Who will be the slot CB?” So far it’s been Beanie Bishop. Is it a perfect solution? Absolutely not, but this young man has come in and shown he belongs. Will he be the anchor at slot CB? He still has to win the job, but he has certainly turned heads.

Cameron Johnston

The team’s prized free agent, meaning he was the first player signed, has already made quite  a stir this preseason, and for the right reasons. I still want to see him perform at a high level when the weather the cold, but he has been booming punts and leveling returners at a high level so far.

Stock Falling

Russell Wilson

Injuries suck, but we also have yet to see what Wilson truly will bring to the team as a potential QB1. We’ll get to see this on Saturday night, and Wilson could prove his worth in many ways and find his way into the stock up category next week. Until then, the Russell Wilson experience has been disappointing.

Cole Holcomb

Will he even play this year? That is now the question, and while we knew this was a possibility. Still tough to see Holcomb potentially missing regular season games.

Quez Watkins

While Watkins had a strong last week in camp, his in-stadium performance left a lot to be desired. Can he bounce back and put his name in the hat for WR3/WR4? The fact he has to bounce back should explain enough…

WR2 Search

Everyone thought the Steelers would be adding to the WR room, but it has been the polar opposite. At this point I don’t foresee an addition, and that might bother many fans. Yet it’s the reality of the situation at the moment. Could it change? Absolutely, in the meantime, the search continues…
