Steelers starting the prospect interviewing process at the Senior Bowl

For some teams, their regular season just ended. For others, they have been in full offseason mode for weeks, if not over a month. Either way, all 32 teams have their scouts and personnel departments in Mobile, Alabama for the annual Senior Bowl. This All-Star game has not only some of the best athletes college football has to offer, but also the one-on-one component to see who teams might be talking with throughout the week leading up to the game Saturday.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are well attended in the game, and they’ve already started to show some attention to specific prospects. According to Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers have met with Michigan wide receiver Roman Wilson twice, and Mike Tomlin has put Wilson and Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell against one another for the majority of the practice.

For someone like Tomlin, this is as much about Mitchell as it is Wilson. Tomlin wants to see best vs. best, and matchups he thinks will exploit either players weaknesses.

Last season the Steelers fell in love with Keeanu Benton at the Senior Bowl, and they didn’t care who knew it. Come Day 2 of the draft, the Steelers made their pick in the 2nd Round by taking Benton out of Wisconsin. The Steelers are giving a similar amount of attention to defensive tackle Michael Hall.

This per Dane Brugler:

To be honest, these are just interactions with players. All 32 teams meet with almost every player who is invited, and attends, the Senior Bowl. Reports of the Steelers meeting with “X or Y player” are merely the player talking about their interview and/or interactions with the team. In the meantime, these interactions can shine a light on who the Steelers like, just as they did in 2023 with Benton.
