Steelers sign punter Corliss Waitman

The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the 2024 season hoping they had remedied their punting woes from recent years. Signing punter Cameron Johnston to a three-year, $9 million contract as their first player they acquired during free agency this past year, the results during the 2024 preseason were extremely encouraging. But on Sunday in Atlanta, the Steelers lost Johnston to a knee injury which has been reported to be of the season-ending variety.

With the need to bring in another player at the position, the Steelers have reportedly signed punter Corliss Waitman according to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.

After punting for four years for South Alabama, Corliss Waitman signed with the Steelers as an undrafted free agent following the 2020 NFL draft. Although he did not make the team, Waitman spent the 2020 season on the Steelers practice squad as a safety net due to the COVID-19 protocols.

The Steelers waved Waitman following the 2021 draft and he spent the 2021 preseason with the Las Vegas Raiders. With no team calling on his services to start the 2021 season, Waitman signed with the New England Patriots practice squad in November. Waitman was poached by the Steelers in December to fill-in for two games for Pressley Harvey who missed time due to deaths in the family. Waitman punted two games for the Steelers in 2021 where he had seven punts for 365 yards and a 52.1 yards per punt average and a 42.6 net yards per punt average.

Waived by the Steelers following the season, Waitman punted in every game for the Denver Broncos in 2022 where he led the NFL with 96 punts. In Denver, Waitman had a 46.6 yard per punt average and a 41.4 net yard per punt.

For the 2023 season, Waitman signed again with the New England Patriots but did not make the team. He landed on the practice squad for the first month of the season before being released. In 2024, Waitman spent the preseason with the Chicago Bears.

For many Steelers fans, they would have preferred the Steelers keep Waitman after his successful two games punting at the end of the 2021 campaign. This time, Waitman will get the opportunity to stick around throughout the 2024 season until the Steelers have a need to find a replacement.

UPDATE: The steelers have officially announced the signing of Corliss Waitman.
