Steelers sign OLB Markus Golden to one-year deal

The Pittsburgh Steelers are officially in the second week of training camp, and it is usually at this time when the coaches and front office start to get a feel for what they have on their roster.

Sometimes players are added due to injury, but other times the team can see a possibility of making a position group stronger from a depth perspective.

A position most thought was set heading into the preseason was outside linebacker. With T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith entrenched as the starters, Nick Herbig was expected to take the next step in his development and be the team’s 3rd OLB.

While that might still be true, the Steelers made the decision to add a familiar face to their roster Thursday when they signed Markus Golden to a one-year contract.

For those who might feel this signing is a slight on Herbig, it likely is more of the team wondering if Golden is an upgrade over Jeremiah Moon. It is worth reminding fans just because they signed the veteran Golden doesn’t guarantee him a roster spot on the 53-man roster, but it does ramp up the camp battle at OLB.

To make room on the 90-man offseason roster for Golden the Steelers waiver David Perales injured after he left Wednesday’s practice with an apparent knee injury.
