Steelers sign former Top 10 pick to practice squad

The Pittsburgh Steelers have filled out the final spot on their practice squad ahead of practice for preparation of their Week 4 matchup in Indianapolis against the Colts. The Steelers signed cornerback C.J. Henderson, a former top-10 draft pick.

Henderson was the ninth overall selection of the 2020 NFL draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Appearing in eight games his rookie season with eight starts, Henderson had 36 tackles, six passes defensed, and an interception before being placed on the Reserve/Injured List with a groin injury. After appearing in and starting two games for the Jaguars in 2021, Henderson was traded to the Carolina Panthers along with a fifth-round draft pick exchange for tight end Dan Arnold and a third-round draft pick. Henderson played the remainder of the 2021 season and the next two years in Carolina and appeared in 39 games with 22 starts where he had 128 tackles, 10 passes defensed, and two interceptions.

Henderson signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Houston Texans during the 2024 offseason which paid him $500 K in guaranteed salary. Henderson did not make the Texans 53-man roster and only played five snaps during the preseason, ironically against the Steelers in Week 1.

The Steelers were looking for cornerback help after Cory Trice was placed on the Reserve/Injured List on uesday. The Steelers signed cornerback James Pierre from the practice squad, leaving the spot open which the Steelers filled with Henderson.
