Steelers sign former draft pick Tyler Matakevich to a one-year deal

One week before the Pittsburgh Steelers are set the report to training camp at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, they have announced another adjustment to their 90-man roster. The Steelers have signed former seventh-round draft pick Tyler Matakevich to a one-year contract.

Matakevich was selected by the Steelers in the seventh round of the 2016 NFL draft out of Temple and appeared in all but one game in his four-year rookie contract. Only logging 149 defensive snaps in four years, Matakevich had 1,208 special team snaps. In all, Matakevich had 77 tackles with the Steelers and a pass defensed while starting one game in 2018.

Signing a two-year contract in 2020 with the Buffalo Bills upon becoming a free agent, Matakevich signed another two-year deal in 2022, spending four seasons in Buffalo where he only missed one game. Much like with the Steelers, Matakevich only logged 134 defensive snaps compared to 1,356 special teams snaps. In Buffalo, Matakevich had 55 tackles, three passes defensed, and an interception.

To make room on the man roster, the Steelers released safety Jalen Elliott.

Matakevich joins an inside linebacker room that has been completely revamped since his time in Pittsburgh. Adding the significant free agent contract of Patrick Queen this offseason, the Steelers also have Elandon Roberts, Mark Robinson, and 2024 thierd-round draft pick Payton Wilson. Additionally, the Steelers have linebacker Cole Holcomb coming back from a horrendous knee injury from last season and his status for 2024 is still unknown.
