Steelers reportedly signing a free agent CB to roster

The Pittsburgh Steelers have done plenty of work this offseason to add depth at almost every position, but it doesn’t mean there isn’t work still to be done.

One of the positions which could, and likely should, be addressed is cornerback. After losing Cory Trice Jr. to a significant knee injury during training camp, the team has had to rely on unproven talent at the position. While rookie 2nd Round pick Joey Porter Jr. has stood tall on most occasions, he is also nursing an ankle injury which held him out of the team’s first preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Looking at the existing depth at the cornerback position, you can see why they would potentially look to add a cornerback to help bolster said depth. According to NFL insider Aaron Wilson, the team is doing just that on their off day by signing cornerback Nevelle Clarke.

Nevelle Clarke attended the University of Central Florida, and went undrafted in 2020. He signed as an undrafted rookie free agent (UDFA) with the Minnesota Vikings. He was placed on the active/non-football injury list at the start of training camp on July 28, 2020, and moved back to the active roster three days later. He was waived by the Vikings during final roster cuts on September 5, 2020.

Clarke signed with the New Orleans Breakers of the United States Football League on April 1, 2022. He was transferred to the team’s inactive roster on May 12 with a hamstring injury.

The Steelers are likely hoping Clarke can log some minutes or the team in the upcoming preseason game(s) to not put more on an aging veteran like Patrick Peterson. Could Clarke prove worthy of a roster spot? If there is a position which could have a rather unknown player crack the 53-man roster, it very well might be cornerback.
