Steelers bring back former first-round draft pick

The Pittsburgh Steelers have an open spot on their 53-man roster after placing rookie defensive lineman Logan Lee on the Reserve/Injured List (IR) on Saturday. With the Steelers already reportedly bringing in punter Corliss Waitman, his roster spot will likely come from placing Cam Johnston on IR.

So what will the Steelers do with their open roster spot?

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Steelers are bringing back former first-round draft pick Terrell Edmunds who was on the Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad.

Edmunds was the 28th overall pick of the 2018 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. While not flashy by any means, Terrell Edmunds did have five solid seasons with the Steelers outside of the high expectations of a first-round draft pick. Appearing in 79 games during the regular season, Edmunds had five interceptions, 410 tackles, and 26 passes defensed during his time in Pittsburgh.

In 2023, Edmunds signed with the Philadelphia Eagles where he appeared in seven games before being traded to the Tennessee Titans. After a season of seeing less than 500 snaps on defense, Edmunds signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2024 offseason. Failing to make the 53-man roster, Edmunds was signed to the practice squad and was elevated for the Jaguars Week 1 game where he played six defense snaps.

Since Edmunds reverted back to the practice squad on Monday and teams cannot protect practice squad players until Tuesday, the Steelers had a window to swoop in and bring Edmunds back to Pittsburgh. Some Steelers fans may see this as the end for safety Jalen Elliott, who was inactive for the Steelers Week 1 win in Atlanta, the Steelers have the open roster spot for Edmunds at this time.

UPDATE: The Steelers have made the signing of Terrell Edmunds official. Since they announced the signing of Corliss Waitman yesterday with no corresponding roster move, the Edmunds move saw the Steelers placing Cameron Johnston on IR.
