Steelers preparing for the Chargers with Justin Fields at QB
The Pittsburgh Steelers have done it in a unique way, but they are 2-0 after their most recent victory over the Denver Broncos in Week 2. Their back-to-back road wins has the team feeling good heading into their first home game against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3 at Acrisure Stadium.
Tuesday, as is customary in Pittsburgh, Mike Tomlin met with the media to address everything from the team’s quarterback situation, injuries and more. As you could expect, Tomlin wanted to get out ahead of the laundry list of questions surrounding the quarterback position and who will be under center this Sunday at 1pm EST.
While addressing the injury situation Tomlin said they are taking a same posture with Russell Wilson (calf) this week as they were last week with the veteran quarterback. He added how Wednesday Wilson is not scheduled to be a full participant in practice, which means the team will be preparing a plan for the Chargers with Justin Fields at the helm.
Tomlin added they will follow Wilson throughout the week to see if he is improving to the point where he could play. If his participation gets to a new level, better than the last two weeks, they’ll consider Wilson’s potential participation. Otherwise, the game plan will be based around Justin Fields early in the week.
When asked about if Fields has done enough to earn the starting role moving forward, Tomlin refused to talk about hypotheticals. As Tomlin said, talking about who could be healthy or not, is a waste of time.
The other topic which Tomlin spent a lot of time explaining was the situation at offensive tackle. After the failed rotation at right tackle between Broderick Jones and Troy Fautanu, Tomlin said the plan was to use both guys. Why would they rotate? Tomlin cited concerns about Fautanu’s level of conditioning not just in Denver, but at this stage of the season after missing a lot of training camp. The Steelers intended to use both tackles, but when Broderick was heavily penalized they backed off the plan and Tomlin “held his breath” with Fautanu as the tackle for the rest of the game.
When asked further about the tackle position, Tomlin added Jones will get an opportunity to rebound, saying he has to move past it, but he’ll have a chance to move past it.
Some might consider Jones’ current role as a demotion, but Tomlin said the demotion was not about Broderick’s play, but more about Troy Fautanu’s play. Tomlin talked about how Fautanu was “lighting it up” when he was in healthy before the start of the regular season.
The other tackle, Dan Moore, got rave reviews by Tomlin as he said he has “been solid” and how Moore’s approach has him “never moved by what’s going on around him.”
Will Jones get more repetitions at left tackle? Tomlin said Broderick has been the swing tackle, and is getting reps at both left and right tackle.
As for the injuries plaguing the Steelers, Tomlin updated the following injuries:
TE MyCole Pruitt (knee) no update, being evaluated
ILB Tyler Matakevich (hamstring) no update on his status, being evaluated
WR Ben Skowronek (shoulder)
OG Isaac Seumalo (pec) closer to return, won’t speculate on when, just trying to ready the players who are available. Level and quality of participation will be big. Getting close to a return.
Be sure to stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steelers as they prepare for the Chargers at Acrisure Stadium this Sunday in Week 3.
