Steelers place OLB Markus Golden on the Reserve/Retired List

There is a slogan in sports where people say athletes were in town for a “cup of coffee”. They are obviously referring to an extremely short stint with the team. While these type of slogans are usually relegated to sports like hockey and baseball, where players can be called up for a brief time, but there are times when the NFL can have their brief tenures.

For the Pittsburgh Steelers, they had a player in town for a “cup of coffee” with Markus Golden. Golden was signed last week on a one-year contract amidst training camp, but on the day of the team’s first preseason game Golden was placed on the Reserve/Retired List. In other words, Golden is calling it a career.

This from the Steelers official Twitter/X account:

When he returned to the Steelers, Golden talked about how he entertained retirement this past offseason, but was happy to rejoin the team and help with the OLBs. At some point he had a change of heart and decided to call it a career.

Golden spent the 2023 season with the Steelers, recording 20 tackles, 14 of them solo stops, four sacks, six tackles for a loss, a pass defensed and a fumble recovery. His four sacks ranked third on the team behind fellow outside linebackers T.J. Watt (19) and Alex Highsmith (7).
