Steelers place Kwon Alexander on IR, release 2 from the practice squad

The Pittsburgh Steelers are clearing roster space ahead of their Week 11 matchup with the Cleveland Browns. Having released defensive tackle Breiden Fehoko yesterday, the Steelers opened up another spot on their 53-man roster by placing a linebacker Kwon Alexander on the Reserve/Injured List (IR). The Steelers also released two players from the practice squad in tight end Scotty Washington and guard Joey Fisher.

Joining the Steelers after the start of training camp this season, Kwon Alexander appeared in all nine games for the Steelers and had two starts. Playing 362 defensive snaps, Alexander had 41 tackles, 1.0 sacks, one forced fumble, and one interception this season. Additionally, Alexander had just taken over the playcalling responsibilities on the Steelers defense this past Sunday after the loss of Cole Holcomb.

The Steelers making moves on the practice squad are quite interesting. With Mike Tomlin hinting at the return of tight end Pat Freiermuth, the Steelers released tight end Scotty Washington who was only signed to the practice squad several weeks ago ahead of their matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The release of guard Joey Fisher is curious as it does not appear that the Steelers have any moves coming when it comes to the offensive line. Fisher was an undrafted free agent in 2023 out of Shepherd University and spent the preseason with the San Francisco 49ers before signing with the Steelers practice squad ahead of Week 1.

One player who could land on the Steelers practice squad is Breiden Fehoko as long as he cleared waivers by 4 PM today.

Exactly what the Steelers will do with their open roster positions are not exactly known at this time. It is assumed Pat Freiermuth will be one of the players on the 53-man roster, but assuming one of the practice squad linebackers would be the other option would not explain why the Steelers cleared two more spaces on the practice squad. Regardless, the Steelers should have more roster moves announced before their first practice of the week on Wednesday.
