Steelers place cornerback Cory Trice on IR, add two to 53-man roster

The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced several roster moves as they prepare to travel to the Indianapolis Colts for Week 4 of the 2024 NFL season. With only 52 players on the active roster, the Steelers have signed offensive tackle Calvin Anderson and cornerback James Pierre to the 53-man roster and placed cornerback Cory Trice on the Reserve/Injured List (IR).

For Cory Trice, he simply can’t catch a break. Missing all of the 2023 season after being a seventh-round draft pick out of Purdue, Trice came on strong for the Steelers in training camp. Through the first two weeks of the 2024 season, Trice had 27 defensive snaps and 17 special team snaps where he had two tackles and an interception. In Week 3, Trice only saw one defensive snap and two special teams snaps before exiting the game with a hamstring injury. Trice will be eligible to possibly return for the Steelers, but not until at least Week 8.

Signed to the Steelers practice squad last week, James Pierre was elevated for the game and made his presence felt on special teams. Having to fill-in two snaps on defense for Donte Jackson after Cory Trice had been injured, Pierre added 13 special team snaps and did quality job as a gunner on the punt team. Pierre had spent the last four seasons with the Steelers after making the team in 2020 as an undrafted free agent out of Florida Atlantic. In four seasons in Pittsburgh, Pierre played over 900 special team snaps and over 700 snaps on defense. Before the 2024 season, Pierre signed with the Washington Commanders but did not make the 53-man roster.

Calvin Anderson went undrafted in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Rice by the New England Patriots. After failing to make the Patriots’ 53-man roster, Anderson was signed by the New York Jets for the first four weeks of the season, but was poached off the Jets practice squad by the Denver Broncos. Anderson called Denver home for the next three seasons before going back to the Patriots in 2023, where he spent much of 2023 training camp on the non-football injury list. In April 2024 Anderson revealed it was because he had contracted malaria while doing philanthropic work in Nigeria. He was placed on injured reserve on November 3, 2023  after suffering a heart contusion in practice. On August 27, 2024, Anderson was placed on injured reserve, ending his season in New England, and released a few days later.

The Steelers also swapped two players on the practice squad as they signed linebacker Marcus Haynes and released tight end Matt Sokol.

Another significant move with the Steelers was where they did not place outside linebacker Alex Highsmith on IR. According to the Pittsburgh Post Gazette’s Gerry Dulac, Highsmith is due to miss two or three games which would not warrant a trip to the Reserve/Injured List.
