Steelers open Elijah Riley’s 21-day practice window off IR

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in need of help at the safety position, and help might be on the way with Elijah Riley’s pending return off Injured Reserve (IR).

Monday Mike Tomlin spoke about how Riley could return to the team soon, and the organization started that process Tuesday when it was announced they started the 21-day clock for Riley to return to the 53-man roster.

So, what does this mean? It means Riley will be returning to practice, but the Steelers have 21 days to decide if he is able to return to the active roster. If he can’t, he would be placed on season-ending IR. However, with only three weeks remaining in the regular season, it seems to be a now-or-never type proposition.

Riley was placed on IR after getting injured vs. the Cleveland Browns in Week 11, and if he is able to return it could be a lift for the secondary. The team will be without Minkah Fitzpatrick (knee injury) and Damoneae Kazee (suspension) vs. the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 16, and Riley’s abilities would be a welcome addition.
