Steelers officially waive Denzel Mims and Trenton Thompson
The Pittsburgh Steelers offseason 90-man roster is an ever-changing entity. Early in the league year, there are many changes and fluctuations to who the Steelers have set to join them in training camp in July. But once offseason activities cease, changes in the roster are much more infrequent.
On Tuesday, it was reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo the Pittsburgh Steelers were waiving wide receiver Denzel Mims. On Wednesday, the Steelers made the move official as well as waiving safety Trenton Thompson.

When the Steelers release a player from their 90-man offseason roster (which is technically 91 due to an International Player Pathway exemption) at this point of this season, there are a number of reasons it could occur. Sometimes the move is simply made to free up a roster spot. Other times it’s simply not in both the team’s and player’s best interest for them to continue on together. In worst-case scenarios, sometimes news of an off-field incident pops up at a later time to explain the situation. As of this moment, the exact reason these players are being released is unclear.
A second-round draft pick of the New York Jets in the 2020 NFL draft, Mims spent three seasons in New York where he appeared in 30 games with 15 starts and 42 receptions on 92 for 676 yards and no touchdowns. Mims’ top season came in the nine games of his rookie season where he had 23 receptions on 44 targets for 357 yards. Ahead of 2023 training camp, the Jets traded Mims and a seventh-round pick to the Detroit Lions for a sixth-round draft pick contingent on Mims making the Lions 53 man roster. Mims was waived due to injury during training camp which nullified the other conditions of the trade. In early October, Mims landed on the Steelers practice squad where he remained for the rest of the 2023 season. In January, Mims signed a reserve/future contract with the Steelers and was sent to make a $1.055 million bass salary in 2024 had he made the Steelers roster.
After not being selected in the 2022 NFL draft, Trenton Thompson was signed by the New York Giants. Thompson did not make the 53-man roster initially but was signed to the practice squad and landed on the 53-man roster for one game where he played 12 special team snaps. Waived just ahead of the Giants training camp in 2023, Thompson landed with the Steelers for the preseason and was signed to the practice squad. As the injuries piled up at safety, Thompson saw his first regular season action with the Steelers in November and appeared in six games with one start where he had one interception and three passes defensed. Unfortunately Thompson became one of the numerous Steelers safeties to succumb to injury as he missed the final three games of the regular season, as well as the Steelers Wild Card game, due to a neck injury.
Exactly when or what the corresponding roster moves for the Steelers will be is not known at this time. But stay tuned to Steel Curtain Network’s continue coverage of the Pittsburgh Steelers 2024 offseason for more information as it is made known.
