Steelers name Russell Wilson the starting QB, as expected

The Pittsburgh Steelers had a decision to make prior to their Week 1 game in Atlanta vs. the Falcons, and that decision was who will be the starting quarterback for the visiting Steelers?

Wednesday, after practice, head coach Mike Tomlin made the obvious known when he announced Russell Wilson, not Justin Fields, would be the main signal caller when the team starts their preparation for Week 1.

Tomlin explains more about his decision as he addresses media Wednesday:

How the practice setting, not necessarily preseason games, are what dictated the decision on the starting QB.

This decision doesn’t come as a surprise to Steelers fans, and especially to those who keep tabs on the team from right here at SCN. The job has always been Wilson’s to lose, and while the injury to Wilson to start training camp provided more of an opportunity for Fields, it wasn’t enough to undermine the ultimate plan of having Wilson start the season at QB.

When you look at it from the outside looking in, you will see how it has always been easier for the Steelers to go from Wilson to Fields, compared to the other way around. Not to suggest Wilson will fail, but if he does Fields will be in a much better situation than the alternative.
