Steelers make roster moves ahead of Week 3 matchup against the Chargers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are making the final preparations for their first regular season matchup in front of their home crowd at Acrisure Stadium on Sunday at 1 PM against the Los Angeles Chargers. With the 4 PM deadline on Saturday for final roster changes and practice squad auditions, the Steelers have announced they are elevating two players to the active roster. Those two players are familiar names and faces with offensive lineman John Leglue and defensive back James Pierre getting the call up for Week 3.

With only two offensive lineman on the practice squad and the Steelers needing one more in order to have the required eight to have 48 players active on game day, the Steelers have elevated offensive lineman John Leglue.

Undrafted out of Tulane, John Leglue signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent following the 2019 NFL draft. Failing to make the team, he was signed to the New Orleans Saints practice squad where he spent most of the season. Leglue was signed off the Saints practice squad for the final two weeks of the season by the Green Bay Packers but was inactive both weeks. After failing to make the Packers roster in 2020, Leglue was signed very late in the season by the Steelers to their practice squad.

In 2021, Leglue once again found himself in the Steelers practice squad was signed to the Steelers 53-man roster following Thanksgiving . Leglue ended up in six regular season games with five starts as well as starting the Steelers playoff game. After spending the 2022 season on the Steelers practice squad, Leglue signed a reserve/future contract with a Tennessee Titans for the 2023 season but did not make the 53-man roster. The Atlanta Falcons signed Leglue to their squad in mid November, and was elevated for one game with the Falcons where he played eight offensive snaps as well as two snaps on special teams. After failing to make the Falcons roster for 2024, Leglue signed back with the Steelers practice this season.

Pierre spent the 2023 season with the Steelers before jettisoning to the Washington Commanders this past offseason as a free agent. After not making the team the Steelers brought back Pierre to their practice squad this week. With a need at gunner on special teams, it seemed like a natural fit for Pierre to assume that role, considering his history within the Steelers organization.
