Steelers make another trade, acquire defensive help from Green Bay

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been very active leading up to the NFL’s trade deadline at 4 PM EST today. After acquiring wide receiver Mike Williams, the Steelers have made a move to help things on the defensive side of the ball. According to multiple sources, the Steelers have traded for defensive end Preston Smith of the Green Bay Packers.

In 10 NFL seasons, Smith has appeared in 155 regular season games between four years in Washington and six in Green Bay. A second-round draft pick of the 2015 NFL draft, Smith played in 64 games in Washington where he had 168 tackles and 24.5 sacks along with four interceptions and 13 passes defensed. In the last six seasons in Green Bay, Smith appeared in 91 games with 262 tackles, 44.0 sacks, and one interception along with 14 passes defensed. In nine games in 2024, Smith had 2.5 sacks and 19 tackles.

Listed at 6‘5“ and 265 pounds, Smith is a defensive end in a 4–3 defense. Based on his measurable’s, Smith could be looked at similarly to DeMarvin Leal where he could offer depth both at outside linebacker and defensive end. It is unclear at this time how Smith will be deployed in the Steelers defense, but with Leal on the Reserve/Injured List, the Steelers depth along the defensive front has come into question.

As for the compensation for the trade, it has been reported as a 2025 seven-round draft pick.

After making two moves, many believe the Steelers are likely done ahead of the trade deadline. But until the clock hits 4 PM, anything is possible. Until then, stay tuned to SCN’s continued coverage of the Pittsburgh Steelers as they navigate the trade deadline and prepare to face the Washington Commanders this Sunday.
