Steelers leave Week 2 win over the Bills with no major injuries

The Pittsburgh Steelers were dominant in their 27-15 win over the Buffalo Bills Saturday night, as dominant as a team can be in a preseason contest. The constant concern for any NFL organization are injuries in these predominantly meaningless games. In this regard, the Steelers left Saturday’s game unscathed.

After the game head coach Mike Tomlin talked about the “bumps and bruises” associated with play, but didn’t specify any injuries to players who weren’t able to return to action.

The one player Tomlin did speak about openly was rookie cornerback Joey Porter Jr. No, Porter Jr. wasn’t injured, but is still working his way back from injury. It is reportedly a hamstring injury which was sustained prior to the team’s Week 1 game vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and held him out of his first preseason action.

Saturday night Porter had a limited role, and that wasn’t due to a setback. Instead, it was by design. Tomlin spoke about how getting Porter acclimated to life in the NFL was vital, but not putting him in a position where he suffers a setback was also a big part of the equation.

In this regard, the Steelers’ plan was a success. Porter Jr. notched a tackle, 1 pass defense and an interception before calling it a night.

There were several players who didn’t suit up vs. the Bills, and while some were known prior to the game, one in particular was a surprise. The three players who were told to be out of the game prior to Saturday night’s preseason game were:

  • Safety Tre Norwood
  • DL Larry Ogunjobi
  • OG Nate Herbig

The surprise of the group was when wide receiver Hakeem Butler was seen wearing sweats on the sideline, and not dressed for play.

Mike Tomlin will meet with the media early in the week, likely Tuesday, prior to the team’s final preseason game vs. the Falcons in Atlanta. At that time fans can expect an update on some of these injured players, and what it means for their availability on Thursday night. In the meantime, be sure to stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steelers as they prepare for their preseason finale.
