Steelers inside linebackers getting comfortable in their new digs

The Pittsburgh Steelers saw some huge changes in their lineup this past offseason, but none greater than what took place at inside linebacker. Outside of 2022 7th Round pick Mark Robinson, the Steelers completely re-did the inside linebacker position.

Gone was Robert Spillane, in was Elandon Roberts.

Gone was Myles Jack, in was Cole Holcomb.

Gone was Devin Bush, in was Kwon Alexander.

A lot of change can equate in better play, but also a tremendous amount of confusion. It takes time to get comfortable with new teammates, and it unfortunately only happens with real repetitions in games which matter.

As the Steelers come out of their bye, the new trio of inside linebackers is starting to gel together as a collective unit, and the results are paying off. The win over the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5 was likely their most complete performance of the season.

“It was just us playing,” said Kwon Alexander before the bye. “We didn’t have any adjustments. We just went out there and played hard, played fast. We got to the ball. We were out there having fun.

“It shows us where we are, where we can be. We are looking forward to next week to get back playing (after the bye).”

The game vs. the Ravens saw the Steelers inside linebackers not thinking, but reacting. It was a promising performance which is something the group is hopeful they can build upon.

“We can build a lot on it,” said Alexander. “We are taking it one step at a time, trying not to go past that. Just taking it one step at a time. When we get back, we have to have the same routine and just get after it.”

One thing to consider is how the Steelers linebackers aren’t just getting comfortable with one another, but the coaching staff is also getting comfortable with the players they deploy on the field. The team is finally starting to figure things out.

“We have to figure it out together, as a team, and trust each other, offense, defense and special teams,” said Alexander. “That is what we did.

“We feed off of each other. That is the main goal for us to feed off each other, have each other’s back, be successful and get wins. That is what we try and do.”

If the Steelers inside linebackers can continue to be on the upward trajectory, it would be a huge boost for the Steelers defense in every way.
