Steelers injury situation still cloudy as they prepare for the Cowboys

The Pittsburgh Steelers are coming off their first loss of the season, a 27-24 defeat to the Indianapolis Colts in Week 4, and are preparing for a prime time showdown with the Dallas Cowboys. One of the big factors in the game this past Sunday on the road were the injuries suffered during the game.

As Mike Tomlin addressed the media Tuesday for his weekly press conference, he updated several injuries and their status heading into this Sunday night contest.

James Daniels (Achilles) is gong to be placed on Injured Reserve (IR) sooner rather than later, and Tomlin said he would be out for this game. He said the same thing about Alex Highsmith and the groin injury he sustained vs. the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3. So while many fans might have hoped to see Highsmith return to practice, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

On the bright side of the injury updates were players who are still a possibility to return to the team vs. the Cowboys in Week 5.

Nick Herbig (ankle) should be able to play Sunday night, even though Tomlin said he could be hampered slightly early in the week. He said the same about Keeanu Benton, while not mentioning what injury was plaguing Benton at the moment. Cordarrelle Patterson, who also left the Colts game with an ankle injury, is slated to start working his way back this week in hopes of solidifying the run game.

Speaking of the run game, Tomlin added Jaylen Warren (knee) and MyCole Pruitt (knee) will also start their participation this week to see if they will be healthy enough to return to the team Sunday.

When talking about the pectoral injury to guard Isaac Seumalo, Tomlin said he has his first “real shot” to return to the offensive line this week. Seumalo was limited last week and was given the “Doubtful” designation on Friday; however, that designation was changed on Saturday and he was ruled “Out”.

Of course there was a part of the press conference where Tomlin spoke about Russell Wilson and his lingering calf injury, and he talked how he just met with doctors and Wilson has continued to ramp up his work in preparation to return. Tomlin added they are taking it day-by-day, but he is expecting Wilson’s practice participation to ramp up here in the coming days/weeks.

Later on in the press conference Tomlin was asked if there was a reason they were taking it slow getting Wilson back on the field, and he said it was based on how much football has yet to be played. He went on to say how they want to ensure Wilson is fully capable of not just moving, but protecting himself before he is a candidate to return to the lineup.

He also added they are moving into Week 5 with Justin Fields as the starting quarterback.

When it comes to injuries, there could be help on the way with Tomlin saying players who started the season on IR could be eligible to return. Some of those players are:

  • OLB Jeremiah Moon
  • DL Logan Lee
  • OT Dylan Cook
  • ILB Cole Holcomb (PUP List)

Tomlin was specifically asked about Holcomb, but he deferred the question saying a player like Holcomb returning will only help the Steelers defense at the inside linebacker position.
