Steelers injury situation not as dire as once thought heading into Week 16
The Pittsburgh Steelers are coming off a deflating loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 15, but they don’t have a lot of time to hang their heads in shame with the Baltimore Ravens on deck in Week 16 on a short week. As the team prepares for the Saturday game in Baltimore, Mike Tomlin addressed the media Monday, instead of his usual Tuesday day/time, and he addressed the biggest question surrounding the team.
Injuries.
Tomlin spoke about those who were injured in-game, and T.J. Watt topped the list. Tomlin said he just saw Watt in the facility, and he was walking around comfortably. At this point Tomlin said he would label him questionable with the ankle injury.
Also mentioned was Donte Jackson with his back injury and Justin Fields with his abdominal injury. Both players were not able to return to the game, and Tomlin made it clear they will keep the door will open for them to practice and prove they are capable to play on Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium.
On top of those in-game injuries, there were three players who missed the Eagles game due to injuries. Those players were:
- Larry Ogunjobi (groin)
- DeShon Elliott (hamstring)
- George Pickens (hamstring)
Tomlin said he intends on giving this trio increased practice participation this week, and will allow the amount and quality of that practice participation be their guide on their overall ability in Week 16. To wrap up the injury update Tomlin added that none of the six players above will be considered OUT this week vs. the Ravens on Saturday.
On a short week it will be a challenge to get everyone back, but the road only gets shorter in terms of preparation. After the Saturday game the Steelers will host the Kansas City Chiefs on Christmas Day, a Wednesday, so it isn’t as if there is an extended break until after the holiday game at Acrisure Stadium leading up to the regular season finale vs. the Cincinnati Bengals.
In other words, be sure to stay tuned to the team’s injury reports, starting Tuesday, to see if players like Watt and Pickens will be able to return for this huge AFC North matchup Saturday in Maryland.
