Steelers head into Wild Card game vs. the Ravens with minimal injuries

The Pittsburgh Steelers are preparing for the postseason, and their Wild Card game vs. the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Playoffs will be anything but easy. The 8pm EST kickoff at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore will be a challenge the Steelers know all too well having just lost in Baltimore just over two weeks ago in Week 16.

To pull off the upset, the Steelers will need all hands on deck, and Mike Tomlin addressed the media Monday in preparation for the game. During the press conference he outlined the team’s injury situation.

The lone in-game injury sustained by the Steelers was a hand injury to rookie guard Mason McCormick. After the game Tomlin said it would need further evaluation, and on Monday he announced McCormick is now dealing with a broken hand This doesn’t mean the rookie who has been a starter since James Daniels season-ending injury will be out of the lineup; however, McCormick will be fitted for a cast/brace to potentially play, but the Steelers will need to check about his overall functionality with said brace/cast before giving him the green light to play.

As always, but particularly in McCormick’s case, his participation, and quality of that participation, will indicate his availability. If McCormick can’t play, or is considered a reserve lineman for the game, Spencer Anderson would likely get the start.

After the game Saturday night Cam Heyward told media he had been dealing with flu-like symptoms since Friday afternoon/evening. Tomlin reiterated that very fact, and said how the team is giving him some time off to get him as healthy as possible before the postseason.

Outside of those two players, Tomlin added Donte Jackson continues to deal with on-going back issues. Instead of saying these issues are in the proverbial rear view mirror, the team will watch him throughout the week to see if he has any setbacks before ensuring him a helmet on game day.

Other than those three players, Tomlin said there are some players who are dealing with bumps and bruises associated with play. This means you might see players who are limited some early in the week, but it shouldn’t minimize their availability for the playoff game in Baltimore.

All-in-all, the Steelers injury situation isn’t horrible heading into the game Saturday night. Will it matter? That’s an entirely different discussion to have between now and kickoff.
