Steelers Free Agent Targets: Cornerback
The next position we are going to focus on in this free agent series is cornerback. The Pittsburgh Steelers might have hit a homerun in the 2023 NFL Draft with Joey Porter Jr but who will play opposite of him? Patrick Peterson? No. Levi Wallace? No. Is there any corner on the roster that is capable of being a CB2? We have a few unknowns in Darius Rush and Cory Trice Jr, but that’s exactly what they are… unknown. I would not feel comfortable throwing Trice or Rush out as CB2 to start the 2024 season. What free agents are out there can we feel comfortable with playing opposite JPJ?
Kendall Fuller
- Fuller is great option to step in and immediately be CB2. Since the Steelers have their CB1 in Joey Porter Jr, they have the option to get a solid and reasonable priced veteran to play opposite the Defensive Rookie of the Year Finalist. Fuller is a former 3rd round pick and has career stats of: 489 Tackles, 366 Solo, 16 Interceptions, 2 TDs, 2 Sacks. Fuller was the only quality player in a struggling Commanders Secondary.
Sean Murphy-Bunting
- Sean Murphy-Bunting is another quality option to play opposite Joey Porter Jr as CB2. Murphy-Bunting is a former 2nd round pick of the Tennessee Titans. He had a standout rookie season earning his place on the PFWA All-Rookie Team. Murphy-Bunting has also won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he led the team with three interceptions during their postseason run; you can never have enough championship DNA on a team looking to make it to the big game.
Pairing a quality CB2 with Joey Porter Jr is imperative for the Pittsburgh Steelers. We saw too many times last season our CB2 gave up explosive plays. A veteran cornerback that is able to step in and play quality starter level football will pay big dividends. Also having a CB2 that is a veteran will also help with the development of JPJ, instead of having another rookie on the field needing time to develop themselves.
