Steelers expected to release LB Tanner Muse

The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to trim their 90-man offseason roster to get to the NFL mandated 53 players before the 4pm EST deadline Tuesday. Over the weekend the Steelers released nine players, many of whom were expected to be released from the team. Monday and Tuesday is when the tough cuts were slated to come, and it has reportedly already started.

According to Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network, the Steelers are parting ways with linebacker/special teams ace Tanner Muse.

The release of Muse might come as surprise to some, but when trying to predict the team’s 53-man roster, you have to wonder where he fits. He provides tremendous special teams ability, but the fact remains the Steelers are also looking for players who fill a role outside of special teams. And that is where Muse found his way on the outside looking in.

What does this mean for the players who might be considered “fringe” players? It likely solidifies Miles Killebrew’s roster spot, but also provides hope for someone like Tre Norwood who, despite missing the past two preseason games due to injury, provides a versatility Muse simply doesn’t have.

What’s next for the Steelers? Expect more moves to be made, and be sure to stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steelers as they prepare for the San Francisco 49ers in Week 1 of the regular season.
