Steelers Defense Stands Tall in 13-6 Victory Over Denver Broncos
The Pittsburgh Steelers pulled out a 13-6 win over the Denver Broncos in Week 2, largely thanks to their defense, which continues to play at an elite level. While the offense did just enough to get by, it’s clear that there are issues they’ll need to address as the season moves forward.
Justin Fields was solid, completing 13 of 20 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. He also added 27 rushing yards, showing a glimpse of his dual-threat ability. Fields was careful with the ball and made smart decisions, taking what the defense gave him and occasionally looking for the deep shot. However, the offense couldn’t find much rhythm, especially in the second half. Najee Harris totaled 69 tough yards on 17 carries, while Jaylen Warren provided a nice change of pace, adding 42 yards on nine carries. Pat Freiermuth led all pass catchers, finishing with four catches for 39 yards. George Pickens flashed his potential with a couple of catches for 29 yards, but his day could’ve been much bigger—he had a 50-yard catch and a touchdown both called back due to penalties. Pickens continues to show that he is a legit number 1 wide receiver.
The offensive line had its share of struggles, with Broderick Jones having a particularly rough day. He and fellow tackle Troy Fautanu were scheduled to rotate throughout the game, but Jones was pulled after committing several costly penalties and missing assignments in a short span. He didn’t return, and Fautanu took over for the remainder of the game. Jones’ mistakes, along with penalties across the offense, stalled any momentum the unit tried to build.
Despite the offensive inconsistencies, the defense continued to carry the team. They held the Broncos to just six points, with standout performances all around. Demontae Kazee and rookie Corey Trice Jr. both came up with interceptions. Trice had a huge int in the endzone that swung momentum back in the Steelers’ favor. T.J. Watt and Alex Highsmith continued their terrorizing of opposing quarterbacks, each recording a sack, while DeShon Elliott led the team with nine tackles.
Special teams also made a difference, as punter Corliss Waitman was solid, averaging 53 yards on eight punts and constantly flipping the field. Also, per usual, Chris Boswell was as automatic as can be making 2 of 2 field goals with another kick over 50 yards.
While the Steelers’ defense looks like it can keep them competitive in any game, the offense has to find more consistency and explosiveness if they want to keep winning. Justin Fields has done a good job protecting the football, but if the penalties and missed opportunities continue, it could be tough to keep pace with stronger opponents. This kind of performance might work against teams like the Broncos, but as the season progresses, the Steelers will need to step it up on offense.
