Steelers continue to shuffle their practice squad heading into Week 3

As the Pittsburgh Steelers prepare for the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3, their home opener, the team’s roster continues to be shuffled in hopes of having a practice squad filled with players who are capable of being called up to contribute on game days. Tuesday the team announced several roster moves, including Tyler Matakevich being put on Injured Reserve (IR), and Wednesday they continued to alter their roster.

The latest move saw Ben Skowronek being placed on IR, and the team filling his spot on the practice squad with tight end Matt Sokol and wide receiver Jaray Jenkins.

Both Sokol and Jenkins spent time with the Steelers during training camp before being cut with roster cuts looming, but the bigger story here is Skowronek being placed on IR. This news means Skowronek will miss at least four games, and it is due to the shoulder injury Mike Tomlin said needed further evaluation during his Tuesday press conference. Knowing Skowronek would be going to IR was likely the reason he was moved to the 53-man roster, and also why James Pierre was added back to the organization Tuesday.

The Steelers need someone to be their gunner, a job Skowronek did masterfully during his two call-ups to the active roster, and the hope is the players added to the roster can help fill the void until these players can return.

UPDATE: In order for the Steelers to get the correct number of players on their active roster and practice squad, the Steelers have promoted tight end Rodney Williams to the 53-man roster.
