Steel Curtain Network: A Pittsburgh Steelers podcast

Steelers continue their WR search, now looking at Cooper Kupp

I know, I know…

Here goes Jeff again with another sourced report about the Pittsburgh Steelers being interested in another trade for another wide receiver.

If I told you to stop me if you’ve heard/read this before, you’d be clicking off this page immediately.

First, it was the pre-NFL Draft rumors surrounding players like Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and even Courtland Sutton.

Then came the post-NFL Draft rumors which were targeted specifically to Aiyuk, and those lasted through offseason workouts and training camp until Aiyuk decided to stay with the San Francisco 49ers.

But the Steelers didn’t stop there, and were also involved in the Davante Adams trade talks with the Las Vegas Raiders, but Adams would ultimately be shipped, as he requested, to the New York Jets.

Throughout it all the Steelers were continually left with their hands empty, wondering where they will go from here. No matter what anyone says, the Steelers weren’t about to crawl back into their proverbial hole with their tale in between their legs. Instead, they are resolute in their attempt to improve their roster.

As the November 5th NFL trade deadline looms, the Steelers are checking in on all available wide receivers, and there’s a new name we’re hearing about form our source inside the organization. It’s a name you’ve likely heard connected to the Steelers via trade rumors, and that’s Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp.

According to our source, the Rams are requesting a 2nd Round pick for Kupp, but that seems steep for a 31 year old player who has battled injuries the past few seasons. In fact, Kupp has missed the majority of the season with an ankle injury. On top of that, Kupp remains under contract for the next two seasons, and taking on that contract adds another layer to these trade negotiations.

But it isn’t as if Kupp wouldn’t help the Steelers offense. He absolutely would be a welcome addition to a wide receiver room which still lacks genuine play makers and players who can create separation on a regular basis. That’s what Kupp has done since he entered the league with the Rams.

Nonetheless, like all the other trade negotiations which have taken place this season, there are other teams interested. Just a week ago there were several receiver-needy teams, but since then many of those have found their guys via trade.

  • New York Jets – Trade for Davante Adams
  • Buffalo Bills – Trade for Amari Cooper
  • Kansas City Chiefs – Trade for DeAndre Hopkins

Who else would be interested? The main competition for the Steelers finding a receiver would likely be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers lost both Mike Evans and Chris Godwin on Monday Night Football, and Godwin will be gone for the season.

Will a deal get done? That’s anyone’s guess, but at this point in the season I think it’s safe to say the Steelers will make a move for a receiver, the question is which receiver will they land?

Stay tuned for more, and be sure to check out the STEELERS SOURCE podcast below to hear more details from Dave Schofield on the financials surrounding Kupp and what a trade would mean.
