Steelers complete the trade for Bears QB Justin Fields

The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the weekend with just one quarterback on their depth chart after trading Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles. However, Russell Wilson wasn’t the lone quarterback in the organization long after the Steelers completed a trade with the Chicago Bears for Justin Fields.

The compensation?

A 2025 6th Round pick which could turn into a 4th Round pick based on playing time.

This per ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

When it comes to what it will cost the Steelers to have Fields on the roster in 2024, it is $3,233,448, but the biggest question for the team is whether or not they’ll want to pick up the 5th year option on Fields. They have until May 2nd to make that declaration, but making that move would mean Fields would get paid well over $20 million dollars in 2025.

The Steelers absolutely could re-do a deal with Fields, but there will be no pressure for Fields to play in 2024 with Russell Wilson on the team and as the clear No. 1 QB on the depth chart. If Wilson wins the job, Fields can learn behind Wilson and hopefully right his career if the Steelers choose for him to stay in Pittsburgh.

In 2023 Fields finished the season with a 61.4 completion percentage, 2,562 yards, 16 TDs, 9 INTs and a QB Rating of 86.3.

Could the Steelers continue to look at quarterback in the 2024 NFL Draft? They absolutely could, but it isn’t nearly as pressing of a need as it was juts 24 hours ago. The Steelers typically go into training camp with 4 quarterbacks on their roster, and they are halfway to that number at this point.
