Pittsburgh Steelers claim defensive tackle off waivers

The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering the month of July with some needs on their roster, but most would agree the defensive line isn’t necessarily high on their need list. After the Steelers released Denzel Mims and Trenton Thompson this week, they had two roster spots on their 90-man offseason roster. The team signed wide receiver Jacob Copeland Thursday, and have now claimed Willington Previlon off waivers, per NFL Insider Aaron Wilson.

For a little background on Previlon, he is 27, has spent time with the Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Dallas Cowboys and Falcons since signing with the Packers as an undrafted free agent out of Rutgers in 2020, but has never played in a regular season NFL game.

The 6-foot-5, 285-pound defensive lineman played in three preseason games with the Packers in 2021 and and three each with the Buccaneers in 2022 and 2023. In nine games, he has recorded seven tackles and two quarterback hurries.

Does this mean much for the current Steelers depth chart? Outside of another body, most would argue it has very little to do with those players. Nonetheless, every year there are players who thrive in a new system and make a name for themselves. That could absolutely be Previlon, so be sure to stay tuned to SCN for the latest news and notes surrounding the Steelers as they prepare for the start of training camp in July at Saint Vincent College.
