Steelers Burning Question: How should Mike Tomlin handle his dirty laundry?
Last season I did the Friday Night Steelers Six Pack and wondered if it was worth doing further. After all, interaction was not great, and sometimes you just have to adjust. So I decided to call an audible, and not just abandon the Friday night meeting of the black-and-gold minds.
Instead of six questions, I wanted to focus solely on one question.
We’ll still do the preamble of what you’re eating/drinking/listening to, but we’ll focus our attention on the one Steelers question of the week. Don’t worry, most weeks I’ll do a bonus/extra credit question for fun. With all that out of the way, let’s get to the question!
With the news of George Pickens and his body language / eye black message / lack of effort / tantrums, many wanted Tomlin to let loose on the third year wide out in public. At least acknowledge the situation and not pretend it doesn’t exist.
Tomlin did none of the above, and instead is likely handling the issues in-house. After all, he’s not one to air his dirty laundry.
But that doesn’t appease everyone. Some felt as if their intelligence was in question with Tomlin pretending a lack of snaps was somehow related to Pickens’ “load management”.
What say you? Should Tomlin start to hold some of his players accountable in public? Or continue to keep it all in-house?
For me, I don’t feel it necessary to have the head coach of the Steelers calling out players in front of the media. Can he acknowledge a situation? Yes. Can he stop blowing smoke our way and tell us there is no fire? Yes. Both can be true, but Tomlin isn’t about to change anytime soon.
In my perfect world Tomlin would have responded to the situation like this:
“I was made aware of the eye black situation in-game. I wasn’t about to bring it up in-game, we will handle that in-house and I’m sure the NFL will also be chiming in as well.
“As for George’s behavior, there is room for improvement, and there is are discussions happening within the organization to help George be the very best he can be. That’s all I’m going to say about that situation in its entirety.”
That’s how I would have loved to see him handle it…
As for what I’m eating, it’s homemade burritos. As for drink, it’s store bought kombucha, and the tunes will be Johnny Blue Skies (Sturgill Simpson’s new band) album on vinyl. It’s a masterpiece.
Happy Friday everyone!!
