Steelers announce series of roster moves on day of first padded practice

As expected, the Pittsburgh Steelers have made some roster moves on the first day of padded practices at Saint Vincent College. It was already reported Monday evening the team was going to release veteran cornerback Isaiah Scott, and most fans were curious what would be the corresponding roster move.

Tuesday, as the team was headed to their first padded practice in Latrobe, PA, the team announced Scott wasn’t the only player who was released, but so was wide receiver Marquez Callaway. These moves opened up two spots on the 90-man offseason roster, and those spots were filled by TE Matt Sokol and DB Kyler McMichael.

This from the Steelers official Twitter/X account:

The addition of Sokol makes sense with Rodney Williams nursing a shoulder injury he sustained over the weekend during camp practice. Williams might not be out long term, but the team will need to fill his spot on the roster. As for the defensive back swap, the Steelers might just see more of an upside with McMichael compared to Scott at this juncture.

For more detailed information on the two new additions, see below courtesy of the Steelers official homepage:

Kyler McMichael

McMichael originally signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent following the 2022 NFL Draft.

He spent the 2022 season on the Buffalo Bills practice squad and also spent time this offseason with the Arizona Cardinals after they claimed him off waivers.

McMichael played college football at the University of North Carolina where he appeared in 21 games over two seasons. He recorded 44 tackles, 34 of them solo stops, one tackle for a loss, eight passes defensed and an interception.

Matt Sokol

Sokol originally signed with the Los Angeles Chargers following the 2019 NFL Draft.

He has spent time on the practice squads of the Chargers, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions and New England patriots. He also spent time on the Chargers active roster.

Sokol played college football at Michigan State where he appeared in 52 games. He had 31 receptions for 348 yards and two touchdowns.
