Steelers announce roster moves prior to their Week 8 game against the Giants

The Pittsburgh Steelers are hours away from their Monday night matchup against the New York Giants in Week 8, and they are putting their final touches on their game day roster by making some roster moves. These moves are the weekly practice squad elevations which have become a regular part of the week, and this week the Steelers have made the following moves.

This per the Steelers official Twitter/X account:

One of the most significant moves is the Steelers placed rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson on the Reserve/Injured List (IR). Wilson has only appeared in one game this season and only played five offensive snaps with no targets. Roman Wilson must miss at least the next four games for the Steelers putting his earliest return as Week 13.

The Steelers signed running back Jonathan Ward to the 53-man roster after being elevated from the practice squad the previous three games. Ward has 5 carries for 22 yards on 9 offensive plays and his three games with the Steelers, but had no offensive snaps last week. Ward does have 40 snaps on special teams in 2024.

Another move was the Steelers released running back Aaron Shampklin who has appeared in three games for the Steelers this season. Shampklin has 6 carries for 17 yards on 28 offensive snaps as well as 13 special team snaps.

Finally, the Steelers elevated one player from the practice squad for this week in wide receiver Brandon Johnson for the third time this season. In his previous two games with the Steelers, Johnson has been targeted in one time with one reception for 9 yards on 15 offensive snaps.

With the Steelers reducing their 53-man roster by two players and only adding one as well as one practice squad elevation, their inactive list, which is due 90 minutes before kickoff, will only consist of five players.

As expected, the Steelers did not activate offensive tackle Dylan Cook or linebacker Tyler Matakevich from the Reserve/Injured; Designated to Return List. The Steelers opened the 21-day practice window for Matakevich this past week and Cook the week before, but on Saturday ruled him out for this week. There was no reason to bring either player back to the 53-man roster until the bye week.
