Steelers add another coach to their defensive secondary

After a wild 10 days of the Pittsburgh Steelers shaping their 2024 roster, there are still other moves to be made. As Steelers’ Nation anxiously awaits the next addition by general manager Omar Khan, the announcement on Tuesday morning, although welcomed, may not be what Steelers fans were expecting. The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced the addition of assistant defensive backs coach Anthony Midget to their coaching staff.

Before the hiring of Midget, the Steelers coaching staff had a significant discrepancy between the offensive and defensive side of the ball. With the Steelers having 10 coaches on offense, Midget now becomes the seventh defensive coach according to Steelers.com.

Playing for four seasons at Virginia Tech with three being as a starting cornerback, Anthony Midget spent two seasons in the NFL between the Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers but only reaching as high as the practice squad. After 11 years coaching at the high school and college level, with the final year being 2013 as the safeties coach at Penn State, Midget became the assistant secondary coach for the Houston Texans. After six seasons in Houston, Midget was the Tennessee Titans defensive backs coach for three seasons from 2020 through 2022.

The hiring of Midget is not a surprise with the Steelers carrying such a small coaching staff on the defensive side of the ball. Midget will be joining secondary coach Grady Brown in shaping the Steelers defensive backfield as well as defensive coordinator Terrell Austin who’s positionary background is in the secondary.
